2009 ATVA Extreme Dirt Track ATV Racing - RD#3 - Birch Creek - ATV Race Coverage

Danville, VA - Round #3 of the EDT(Extreme Dirt Track Series) headed to southern Virginia for another action packed round of racing! Flat track and TT racing took a hit when the series was split away from the overall quest for the Pro championship. The numbers in the Pro class are growing and the current crop of Pro riders are making things interesting for the fans! It does create an oppertunity however for many amatuers to dive in and have a series devoted to this style of racing on a national stage.

Let's face it, racing costs alot of money and even for a beginner, it's not cheap. Whether it be MX or XC, you're looking at needing a fat bankroll if you want the best of equipment and to keep it at optimal levels....quite a few sponsors to help doesn't hurt either!

The same holds true for TT racing, however one aspect that I never considered was that in this form of racing, once a machine is set up even at the basic level, you wont be having to buy a complete new quad every season so the overall cost can be spread out over a few seasons.

If your new to this type of racing, there are some basic things you will need, but bare bones are nerfs bars, a kill switch and the usual safety gear to keep you as safe as possible. A few models of ATV's actually could be race ready straight from the showroom floor if you entered the knobby class!

Ok, so you have the safety gear and you actually head to a race. Unlike MX or XC, you can be racing faster and better with every lap without having to know how to clear a 70 foot uphill triple or tackle rocks the size of your trailer!

Now I am not saying this type of racing is easy, it's not. But for the average rider, it is probably one of the easiest to get into without spending a ton of money...at first.

Want a racing venue that you can break out your 250R or Banshee on and rip into them four strokes? This is where its at! Todays MX and XC tracks favor the four stroke and the riders that race them. The series promoters have tailored it to the bulk of machines being raced, but here there are quite a few classes that you can run things wide open and who doesn't love the sound of a 2 smoke and the smell of racing fuel mixed with some Klotz!

If you can hit the gas, shift and brake, then you should be ready to try your hand at this type of racing.

There are ofcourse some things you will want to do when racing, and getting off the seat and using it to your advantage will help make those high speed turns a breeze!

Now you dont have to have tires made just for this type of racing, but if you're going to make an honest go of it, they are a must have. Again, it's nice to have a choice on something that can get you off the couch and at a race competing that you can build while your learning without destroying your machine

A Sway-bar is going to be an item you will want if you decide to go ahead and make this racing your thing! It is absolutley amazing how these guys get these atv's around the track as fast as they do! Even the knobby class was flying and many had nothing but the bare essentials!
