2005 FMF Extreme Dirt Track Round 3 - Pine Lake ATV Race Coverage

Ashtabula, OH - FMF Extreme Dirt Track ATVA National racers and their families began arriving early at the Pine Lake facility just outside Ashtabula, Ohio. By sunset on Thursday, 2 days before the event, the shaded pits among the Ohio hardwoods were beginning to fill. By the time sign up and tech inspection rolled around Friday afternoon, 482 entries lined up to put their name on the race list and have their machines tech inspected. History was in the making with this record number of entries for the 31st annual Pine Lake event.

Bud Fischer's track crew consist of volunteers from local organizations who are welcomed year around to enjoy the lake, hunting and fishing privileges of the Pine Lake campground "free" as Fischer's way of saying thank you. These numerous volunteer track personnel ran a tight ship at the Ashtabula event and there were plenty of them to keep the event running smooth.

Robbie Whitehead of North Carolina announced Round 2 of this year's Dirt Track series in Danville, Virginia at Birch Creek and was invited up to Ashtabula to keep the racers and fans informed as to what was going on all weekend long. Robbie spent most of his time in the scoring tower above the "Granddaddy Of Them All" dirt tracks on the FMF/ATVA circuit promoting sponsors, filling in tid-bits of information about all the racers and creating an on track excitement for the fans as he called the races.

James Perry of JPMX stopped where he was supposed to at the black top starting area. All over the pits and track, one only had to read the signs to know what they were supposed to do and not supposed to do. Fischer's crew, and there were a lot of them, conducted the races in a highly organized way with a polished professionalism. Many of them had been working with Fischer for years.

There's nothing like a Dirt Track fan with classic wheels. We snapped this shot of an Ohio fan as he two wheeled his way through the pits on his classic bicycle. After watching him tool around the vending area it struck us that he had small wheels in the back and big ones in the front, just like a lot of the 90 Mod. and 90 Production class quads competing on the track.

Kaleb Dycus and his dad made the trip from Arkansas to test their skills in the 90 Mod class at Pine Lake. "This is the best track there is for TT, I mean, Dirt Track racing. You can't beat it. It's like the Loretta's of the Dirt Track series." Kaleb's dad remarked about the famous Pine Lake track.

This Fischer crew member comes back year after year to take on his responsibilities of pointing down the racers just before the light goes green. All day long he runs from one side of the blacktop starting pad. If you're not ready, you'd better raise your hand because once he zipps across the front line of 10 racers the light's going green faster than you can blink.

Keith Little (#12) came out alive and kicking in the first Pro qualifier. He led Harold Goodman all the way to the checkers and posted the fastest lap time in the qualifiers which would benefit him immensely after Sunday's rain out.
