300ex engine pinging

My son ran his 300ex out of oil and when i checked it the dipstick showed nothing. I put oil in it and it is pinging kinda bad . What part of the motor do i need to rebuild and how much work will it be? can anyone help with this matter?

I'd start with the head/valvetrain. The Cam/Rocker area is the most likley cluprit for ticking noise.

Most likely if he ran it out of oil its either leaking in the motor from the valve guides or its leaking somewhere on the case. The pinging could be something more then valves. It could be piston slap or the piston pin or crank pin badly worn.

Could be something in the bottom end also, crankshaft maybe?
