I used to have that problem, a lot. Then I started shaking the powder in the container. Before filling the gun cup. Shake the livin chit out of it, then when you think you have shook it enough, shake it some more. Now I never get the black spots. and I get as much as $500 for a set of wheels in chrome smoke.
Here is a wheel from a set I did for a black enclosed snowmobile trailer. These have a satin clear over the base color to help conseal all the pits in the wheels.

try preheating the part, then after 5 minutes in the oven pull it and recoat. ive seen that happen with that powder a ton. the hobby guns (even the pro gun) dont pull enough powder on the part and when that powder is thin it will bleed.

Posted by: Woodsrider

Here is one of the Toyota wheels I did, with a 95% gloss finish.
the shop lighting really sucks in this picture

Your right Pappy, I had a hard time getting it just right with that color. There is a fine line between too thin and bleeding, and too thick and getting a uneven finish. I shoot more of that color than any other. And it is the color I hate the most. The demand for wheels in that color is unreal.

Posted by: Pappy

yeah i see them done like that alot. i get stuck with retro finishes on classic cars. i turn down most rice work....i just cant stand the owners not the cars

Posted by: K_Fulk

Thanks for the tips with the black chrome pappy and soggy I have been about ready to throw it out.

Hopefully when i go back to work this spring ill pick up the pro gunand and of of those thermometers too. That should help me out too.

Posted by: Woodsrider

LMAO Yah I know what you mean. The majority of the wheels I do arent for the ricers, but for $34,000 cars. The dealership I work for has me do alot of wheels for them. and I also got an *** load of wheel repairs from folks who scrape the curb and want to fix the wheels. The ones that are the real pain are the 18" stockers on the new TL. I get a lot of those that the tire guys screw up trying to stretch the 45 series tire on it and chipping the finish on the bead.

Ya know the more I think about it, with the money they have paid me to refinish them wheels they could have bought a new tire machine that wouldnt damage the wheel.

i dread rims. my brother in law is a total gimp and works for sears. all he does is change tires (but ofcourse he has $50k in tools) i wouldnt let this SOB change my light bulb much less my tires. anyway i had a set of riken's pc'd trans blue and he asked me if i wanted him to mount them at that point i realized sooner or later some other gimp would be changing tires on my pc'd rims somewhere and they would get FUBAR. i havent had anyone come back yet but im sure i will. i will kick my brother in law even if he wasnt the responsible one

screamin ive posted so many pics im stayin out of it. but if you tell me what color you are lookin for ill see if i have anything i havent posted 50 times

Wanna PC my frame?!!!!! Ever seen Orange with some silver or some other color of flakes in it before??? If I can, I would like to add a color with the orange......

Posted by: daimon1054

A few parts that I saw on street bikes that looked awesome were done with powder over chrome. Not sure the technique but the look was like color chrome. Also for the best finish you need to polish the part you are doing. I know a lot of work but the look is flawless.
Just a tip to anyone wanting to get powder coating done it is all in the prep. For a shop to do it right they will charge a ton if you want a flawless look. But if you strip the paint sand it smooth then polish it, yes steel can be polished, then wipe a light coat of oil so it does not rust then the cost is cheap to have powder done. The good shops will degrease then pre-bake the coat you part. Remember paint does not hide flaws it brings them out, if you look at chrome what is done is cleaning the part, then polishing it then dipping them in a hard copper to fill the small scratches then polish, dip in soft copper, polish repeat till smooth the dip in hard copper, polish then nickel, polish then chrome and a final polish. Yeah tons of work but if you just put chrome on first is will look like crap. Same for chrome look powder coat, it needs to be put on a perfect surface.

Try shaking the powder and straining it before applying. Even if it fresh powder that You just got today, it tends to settle during shipping. Also Keep the gun at least 18" from the part so that just the fine particles make it to what your coating.
Hope this helps.

All these pretty pics makes me want to go coat something.

charcoal metalic . it is way cool in person but its depth isnt shown in pictures...atleast any that i have its real close to a gun metal grey with metal flake...very fine metal flake. you have to use clear and once the clear is applied it really takes off. in the sun it doesnt sparkle like prizm powder but you can tell that its not just silver or grey in color

Posted by: Dave400ex

What is just a good standard gray color to use? I am having my frame/subframe done Red, and wanted my a-arms, stem, and swingarm a gray type color.

Posted by: Pappy

my personal choice is silvervein with clear. it is a neutral color that goes with just about everything. silvervein must be cleared if its to be used outdoors. it will start turning dark and the silver will wear away if you ride in water or wash the quad alot.

The bluevein or greenvein with black plastic would be badazzzzzzzzz. Oh and touches of polished and chrome parts...

I might make my new YFZ450 those colors...

Well I THOGUTH I knew what I was getting for my Bday( I was SOOOOOO sure it was PC! )...............But I guess in some ways it was a better surprise than I thought.......

Posted by: ScreaminZ400

does anyone have a silver vein subframe?

Posted by: TRX310R Rider

Does anyone have pictures of redvein? I am getting my R frame powdercoated soon and I was going to go with redvein or just a regular candy or something but I haven't seen to many red or redvein frames or even parts so if anyone has some please post pictures. Oh and by the way I have black plastic. So, black plastic and springs, then red frame, hubs, set and hood. Yeah I think it will be nice especially with the chrome stuff I am going to have and a 310 sitting in it...Later

Posted by: K_Fulk

I just got my frame done. Its has a silvervein base with a translucent red topcoat. Can't really see how good it looks in the pics but here they are.

Posted by: K_Fulk

up close

Posted by: 400exstunta

i decided to go with reddish blue for my frame. should be done in a week or so. Ill post pics as soon as i get it back. it will be with orange plastics. the lady said that it comes out blue, like amsoils blue on their stickers, but has a slight red tint to it. i figured for the price i got it for, IF i dont like it, I can have it recoated and still not pay as much as some places charge for a coating.
