250r vs. 400ex maitenence wise

Hey,
My brother just got a lt250r and I am looking for a quad. I am thinking about either a 250r or a 400ex. A 250r would have around the same power as my brother's, while the 400ex would have less (correct?) What is the difference maitenence wise that I would have to do to these two quads? Are twostrokes that much more of a hassle? Thanks for the help.

A stock 250r and stock 400ex aren't as far apart in power as you would think(actually pretty close). I think the problem with 250r maintence is that they are old. I personally would just get the 400.

400ex will have alot less maintenance from the start. Mine starts fine every time and never dies on the trail.

didnt you already make a thread on this about a week ago? i remeber typing a full page of information for a guy whos brother also got a lt250, and found a 88R with some mods..

anyways, id go with a 250r. just make sure you dont buy a dud, go over the r you plan on buying throughly to make sure its in good shape. you will thank yourself in the longrun.

reasons id pick an r over an ex anyday:
-WAY cheaper to make faster, gain much more HP with mods (pipe for instance). throw a pipe on, an airfilter, and a reeds, and itll cost you twice as much to get that much more HP on a 4stroke
-to me, 2strokes are more fun to ride and take more skill to be a fast rider
-aftermarket companies make bascally every product for it (a/m companies also make a ton of ex products, but ive always seen products listed for r's and not ex's.

take care of a 2stroke motor, and it will last almost as long as a 4stroke. but of coarse 4strokes will always have a slight advantage reliablity wise.

and hey, somthing must be so good about the ol 'ring dings' if they are still competing with these new and advanced 4strokers.

Make sure it's actually a 250R engine in the 250R. The other day when I went to go see the Blaster my brother bought there was a 250R at the dealership but it had a Blaster engine in it...

It may seem like an easy thing to spot but I was staring at it for a good 15 minutes trying to figure out why it looked different from any other 250R.

how do you confuss and 250r watercooled motor with a dinky aircooled blaster motor???

That's what I was asking myself too, first I saw a pipe on it that I'd never seen on any 250R before and I was like "hmm...that's weird..." then I was just sitting there looking at it and I took a knee and actually stared at the engine and saw the fins for the cooling and smacked myself in the forehead and said duh you idiot it's a stupid little Blaster engine! I should've known to look for that sexy liquid cooled smooth engine! I was quite dissappointed in myself.

choosing one or the other is hard. I was considering trading my 400ex for a predator but I can't decide what to do. Then I thought about keeping my reliable 400 and save up for a 250r. I love my ex but I also love two-strokes. But I have the luxury of already owning a low maintenance 4-stroke. So if I get a 250r if it needs re-boring or something I can still ride my ex. I also do all my maintenance myself and have been working on 2-strokes forever. They are pretty easy to fix. I think it depends on what kind of power you like!

Get the 250R!!! Like Tants said just go through it and make sure its in good condition. It might need a couple things but once it is solid it will be very reliable. I dont want to go back to a four stroke now
