i will be picking up a brand spanking new 2002 400ex in a few weeks and will have about $2,500-$3,000 to put into modifications. up until now i've done mostly trail riding, but lately i've been thinking about getting into the racing game. what mods would you guys/gals suggest for a racing setup with that amount to spend?

What kind of Racing will you do? For XC Racing I would get PEP ZPS Front Shocks, and have the Stock Rear Shock Converted to PEP ZPS. That`s $1320 plus Shipping. You will have awesome Suspension though. You might want to get a Steering Stabilizer also. If you are racing XC, some Beadlocks and Stronger Tires will be needed. You can do all kinds of stuff. Let us know what kind of Racing you will do though. If you are going to race MX your Setup will be different.

Where in NY are you from? and where do you plan on racing?

i'm from putnam county, about 50 miles north of nyc. as far as where i plan on racing, more than likely this season i would stick to the closer races (pennsylvania, maryland, etc.) and hopefully race more of the series next season.

For XC and all racing really, stay with handling mods first. If i were you I would get pep zps shocks and a rear rebuilt zps, plus 1 houser a arms, carbon fiber beadlocks on razrs all around, renthals bars, protect skids, any bumper, and a wide grab bar.

First mod should be removing the parking brake and putting on a different clutch lever and perch.

Most important thing in my mind is to get your quad as comfortable as possible, youre gonna be on it for hours at a time, you have to be as comfortable as possible, Good shocks, good grips and bars, a set of handguards, tether kill switch is a must, maybe get a High Flite seat or something, Think comfort is my advice

I wish I was 16 so I could race, but ill just have to wait til next year I guess

Good Luck

1. Must haves. Safety gear. Helmet, boots, chest protector, etc

2. Will help alot. Aftermarket rear tires, nerfs, shocks, steering stabilizer, rear skid, aluminum handlebars. keep the front & rear stock width. you'll be o/k with the stock rims and a-arms, most people are.

3. Get the handling down, then go for motor mods. pipe & airbox mods

4. Save some cash for unexpected stuff, track fees, club dues, repairs, food etc. that stuff adds up fast. Good Luck!

Don't forget your lucky underwear

with that money, i would concentrate on suspension and protective peices, like some good shocks, skid plates, a good tire/rim combo(supersized with fries and a coke), handles bars(the stock ones are crap) and things like that. If your doing XC racing, there is no need for extended a arms. I don't do much XC racing but an extended swingarm might help.

hope i helped

You want the a arms for adjustibility. You bring it back to stock width with offset wheels.
