My bro's run Yamalube in everything too, I run it in my Kodiak & heck if it's all thats left it'll go into whatever needs it!! As forthe Motul oooooohhhhhh I cant ever remember unless I see the bottle, I'll check it out later & try to post it. Yes it is good oil someone suggested it cuz the 300 was running really HOT & it worked good.

Posted by: hotrodhonda400
I use golden spectro synthetic blend.
Posted by: gncc400exxx
I have used Valvoline 10w40 in my 400ex for 5 years. and after 17 GNCC races the engine has never been touched except to change a plug once or twice a year.
Posted by: Maxxed out
haha no Yamahlube isnt bad, I was just saying its seemed kinda wierd to run yamaha oil in your honda. I run Honda HP4 20w-50. It says it was specifically made for hondas, so why not run it?

Generic Havoline stuff from the auto parts store. Works just as good as the stuff you pay 8$ a bottle for at the Honda shop.

Would Honda HP GN4 20w-50 for break in and then Mobile 1 15w-50 full synthetic after be a good setup?

In the old days people use to run differnt weights of oil between the summer and winter. Until now, we have made oil to change the weight on its own. Take 5w30 for example. The W stands for Winter. In cold weathers, it's 5, and summer (hot temperatures) it's 30.

Don't put cars oil in your quad : it's bad for the clutch
in my 300EX I was using Motul 15W50 in the summer and 5W30 during the winter. Was running fine and this oil is not so dispandius
Posted by: ewalker302
just change the oil & filter reglarly other than that it really doesn't matter at all.
I have been riding bikes 3-4wheelers since ATC70's & 110's.
I have always run 10w40 in them all (castrol, texaco, chevron, whatever).
I have always kept my oil/filter changed & never had any engine trouble at all. I'm not talking about babying these bikes either I'm pretty rough on a bike. I've had to drain vanilla milkshakes out of my 250sx probably 20+ times after sinking it then driving it back to the truck. I got it new in 86 & it runs like a champ.
About the clutch, the only thing that will harm them is friction modifiers. Regular petoleum motor oil does not contain friction modifiers & will not mess up a wet clutch.
Don't run automotive synthetic except for the red cap mobil 1, cause most all other auto synthetics do contain friction modifiers.

ANYONE with some real experience with AMSOIL
my buddy is an amsoil dealer and he bugs me constantly...currently i use gn-4 and change every 10 hours. I also have just threw in a new clutch. TC says stay away from sythetics but sometimes you wonder???
What do you guy think about this amsoil for the 400ex.. buddy is a car man, I need some solid factual advice from someone who has used in the quads, 400ex.
thnx

Bunch of users use the synthetic oils on exriders for their quads. Me personally, I think it would be better to run it thru, just like a car.

Sure would.

Redline....if I run out of that....then Crisco vegetable..........
Posted by: AlaskaSpeed
I wouldn't run a synthetic during break in....or at least til I was sure the rings have fully seated. Smoking ain't cool! lol

Have to say I agree with using a regular oil for the break in ... after that I go with Royal Purple 20-50 unless you are in some really really
cold weather it should not be a problem.
The other thing is to make sure that the oil is up to 100 degrees before you launch.... that will ensure that you get the best lubrication.
For what its worth Mobil 1 syn. is my standby... and you can get that most anywhere......
Good luck......

I used to run HP-4 in my Kawi KLX650, and back then it had molybdenum in it, which is the same stuff as in Slick50. If that's not a friction modifier, I don't know what is. I never had any clutch slippage problems. Are they still putting moly in the HP-4?
Posted by: snrobin
It's not common knowledge but did you guys know that Napa brand oil is actually Valvoline! That is what a Honda Mechanic told me to use is Napa (Valvoline) 10W-30. He said that is all he ever uses in his machines...... BUT....i think the best oil is whatever you trust in your own machine. Just my 12 cents worth

silkolene ATV 10W40 all year in my four stroke
in my two stroke silkolene medium gear oil and yamha 2R premix.
silkolene and bel ray are the only aftermarket oils i use. yamaha does make good oils for the record. there 2R and 2S are great for two strokes.

I checked out my own moly question today, and here is what I found: HP-4 no longer comes with moly in it, but you can buy HP-4M that still has it. I asked the service manager at my Honda dealer if it was recommended for the 400ex, and he said it is not because the moly can cause clutch slippage. This doesn't really make sense IMO, because the HP4Moly is still sold as a motorcycle oil, and don't all cycles have wet clutches? I ran it in my KLX650 for thousands of miles, and never experienced any clutch slippage, and that has a helluva lot more torque than a 400ex. It did make it shift a lot smoother. What's the worst that can happen? You need to rebuild your clutch a bit earlier if the friction plates get plugged up with moly? Big deal, clutch plates are a lot cheaper than engine and gear rebuilds.

Instead of making a new thread I'll ask this Q here. My 300 is ready for its first oil change, what's the best kind to use??

All conventional oils that i've run in my quad turn black after 3 hours of use.
Mobil 1 takes about 30 hours to break down and it doesn't turn black, at least I've never seen it black. My quad will never see conventional oil again. Synthetic is were it's at..

Penzoil has just come out with a new 4-stroke ATV oil that is awesome. I have been running it for a few weeks in my '96 300ex and it seems to make the clutch a little smoother to opperate then the regular motor oil was using before.

Bel- Ray or a sythetic blend by Castrol for 4 strock motors.

I use mobil 1 synthetic 15w-50 have been for 3 years with no problems.
Red cap that you get at walmart or just about anywere. Synthetic does not cause clutches to slip. Maybe on bikes 20 years old but not current models.
4 hours of riding/racing will break down conventional oil and turn it black.
20 hours of the same with syn. and the oil looks fresh.
Posted by: j4rdemotox
Right now I use a synthetic blend. I was going to go full synthetic, but someone told me that they notice that there clutch was slipping when they used synthetic oil. It did not make sense to me because he has a 400ex. The only thing I could think of is maybe his maybe he needs a new clutch. Well I have my answer.
Thanks for your input!!

i use havoline semi sytec 20w-50 works nicely n since its half synthetic its lasts longer

Have you ever had carbon build-up on your heads ? How about in the pipe? Unfortunately, some folks have experienced carbon from using Yamalube; it's possible this is from mixing too rich. Many folks I've talked to would rather mix too rich than too lean and that would definitely cause it; in fairness to Yamalube, this problem would exists no matter what oil you're using.
