I've never been to Pismo, but it's on the beach, right? Anybody ever swim or surf there, or even go in the water at all?

Yea, Pismo is a beach, there are also the dunes there... usually called "Oceano Dunes". I've swam there a couple times, it's freezing. Waves aren't ideal for surfing but a lot of people still do.
