doesnt wd40 ruin the chain? thats wat i heard, like it eats the orings or somethin

wd40 does not attack rubber like most harsh cleaners will. i'm sure over time, it could affect the chain, but you would have to leave your chain soaking in wd40 for months at a time to harm it.

there are these things called chain scrubbers, www.rockymountainatv.com I was going to buy one at the local shop but they didnt have any in stock so i said screw it, it looks like it could work pretty good, plus it comes with a solution

Do the job right. Remove the chain, put it in a bucket with kerosene, and scrub it...she will come out like new.

What does WD-40 contain?
While the ingredients in WD-40 are secret, we can tell you what WD-40 does NOT contain. WD-40 does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, wax, graphite, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), or any known cancer-causing agents.

Kerosene and an iron brush. No, not metal iron, golf club irons.

I know it's not the proper way, but I clean mine with pressure wash when I clean the quad then lube it shortly after with synthetic chain lube from Maxima. I am still running the original chain from 2001, so it can't be that bad.

Thanks for that bit of info. I've always heard that kerosene was the main ingredient in WD-40. I guess me and them were wrong.

I am with Sparky - mineral spirits. This is what Sidewinder recommends. I started using it to get the gook off a new chain before you even use it as recommended by Sidewinder. It doesn't harm any of the rubber. I wouldn't soak a chain overnight though. You just want to clean the external dirt. There is grease sealed internally that you don't want to soak out of o-ring or x-ring chains.

Yeah I know that's why I used it. We have a large tank of diesel that our tractor trailers use at my dad's business so I get it free. It worked really good too.

i use kerosene and a rag and wipe the chain and sprocket clean, then warm the chain up by riding it and put "Chain Wax" on it, it works good, but you are supposed to warm it up before applying it, it comes in a goldish brownish and black erisol (sp?) can
also, i use kerosene to clean my foam air filter too, just pour some in a coffee can, and set the filter in there, not letting the kerosene flow over the top so it doesn't get dirty on the inside, i let it soak then once it is clean take it out, dap it with a rag and let it dry, which will take a while, don't apply oil until it is completely dry
you will be amazed at how fast the kerosene will take of the air filter oil and dirt, but don't use it on a k and n
