ok...i go to install my new grips.....and as soon as i slide the grip on the handle bar smoke starts comin off them the 3m weatherstrip adhesive melted the new grips damn near apart the very end of the grip melted almost immediately and i barely had time to rip it off the barsd before i had a huge mess wtf lmfao

Posted by: 2000400EX

sounds like there was a chemical reaction with the 3M adhesive and the type of rubber compound that the grips were made out of.....

I'd try a different type of grip....

i have no chioce now..lol

Posted by: Doibugu2

At least your quad didn't catch on fire.

Posted by: anywhereEx

What type of grip were you using? I have had luck with Oury and Renthal medium compund.

Posted by: Pappy

they were renthal meduim ive used this glue for all kinda grips and never had it do this:confused2

Posted by: dirtmomma

That sounds like some crazy chit man LOL

Posted by: GNCC#829

Renthal says that you have to use THEIR glue when installing Renthal grips. I always thought that they were trying to make an extra buck. Maybe there is a reason.

Posted by: Pappy

no clue on the glue ive used it before on renthals...but it never smoked and melted the grip...rotflmfao

Posted by: ZRacer

Pappy, I know what happened. You pushed them on too quick. The friction generated so much heat it melted them. Remember you are the one that torques his axle bolts to 100ft/lbs with your fingers

Posted by: user101

the scientific name of this rare phenomenon is called "gripus meltus because or wrongus glue"

Posted by: nacsracer27

thats gotta suck, get the clamp on stlyer like i got, never go back to the old glue type

You mean they started burning and you didn't use no maches? This migt be a good idea for a new business. Emergcy fire starters and stuff. I never seen no rubber maches but I bet people on the intronet will buy them. If you make lots of money don't forget me... I need some income now the economy is so screwed up and I has no job.

You ain't got no idae do you cause I ain't never took 1 red sent from the government I work hard for everything I got and I don't like squirles they're too tough (muskrat is much better but I'm sure you know nothin about that). So when you know a little more then you come back and say bad stuff about me but until then don't be talking about stuff you don't know cause you don't know. And I ain't crabby ether.

And as far as my poltical view goes if the govement screwed you around as much as I have it this year you wouldn't be happy with it ether. You can bet I vote the Democrat ticket next time. They mite taxashion us to death but at least we'll have jobs cause they won't send them all to Mexico or let all them come up here and take all are work away.

Posted by: UglyMotha™

if think squirel is tuff than your fixing it all wrong when i make it, it literally melts in your mouth you stick to your greasy muskrat meat though

hahah the same thign happened to my friend, it was a waste of 10 bucks on grips lol

Posted by: Rip_Tear

That is werid! The weridest thing like that I saw, was a painted 2 stroke pipe (with the proper hight temp stuff) burn off and melt the plastic a bit... But that is werid Pappy, and it sucks!

Posted by: 310Rduner

Pappy.. the only thing ill ever use anymore to hold my grips on is this glue called GRIP-IT. it is instant grip glue.. dires in about 10 secs or less.. i have to use a little hairspray so i can get them on quick enough.. otherwise they get stuck on halfway lol.. bad experience the first time i tried it.. it tore the grips in half when i tried to remove it lol.

bottle says it is industrial strength instant glue.. I also is it on many other things cause it is so strong. it held a crack in my plastics in place for liek 3 weeks before they became undone lol...

i only use like 5 drops on my grips also..

if you cant find it around you id be willing to buy a bottle and send it to you if your interested.. its like 7.99 for a bottle of it?

This is your last warning - keep out of all threads unless you having something constructive to say about the topic.

Pappy, something to consider here, since you have done this before without a melt down, is what you used to clean the handle bars. Your chemical reaction could have been caused by your cleaning solution. Just a suggestion.

Posted by: EX_RIDER

I remember the last set of grips i got i ut to much renthal glue in them and the grip end got ate off like it was acid the next day.I was able to pull mt grips apart in like 20 peices.

Posted by: 440EX4me

I am thinking it has more to do with the grips than any glue or swallers

Posted by:

I think pappy was gettin the buzz on and lit the end of his handy bars instead of the binger he keeps hid under the counter next to the blue bucket...

Wasn't Pappy complaining he couldn't see his monitor awhile ago, so that is why he bought a new computer. And his wife just told him to clean the screen.

Pappy, don't exhale on the monitors, you will get build up from the bud.

Posted by: ridesa02400EX

hairspray works pretty good for my grips

Posted by: Pappy

yall know i dont hit the cheeb

all fixed...used the same glue with a different brand of grips...no troubles...and no smoking molten gooey mess

Posted by: 250x#93

Sounds wierd

Posted by: danney f

I have always used clear coat. works great.

Posted by: hessianmx111

i use a couple dabs of scott grip glue and a little sprizzay of aqua net and they stay in place. this is renthal medium dual compound grips

Posted by: Chef

Yep...Pappy's a mad scientist. That was really a bomb he was tryin to make.

Posted by: QuadMX18

scott grip stik grip glue is the only thing that has kept my grips on so far. Also how much are those clamp on grips. They may not fall of the side but wont they still twist in the middle?

nope, its aplastic insert with 2 pop out on each end..they make the grip around it...then the 2 opo outs snap into the 2 metal clamps....then you tighten the clmaps and they wont budge, best grips ive ever used

Hmm cool

Posted by: 440EX4me

I have never had one single prob with loose grips and all I use is a inexpensive (about $1-2 tube) gen purp contact glue. Think its called glue all or seal all etc but any really tacky stuff should work fine.

The others that have worked well were auto trim adheasive and auto type spray adheasive. These just were more expensive and still didnt hold as well as the generic contact glue.

The glue all stuff usually wont let you remove the grip without cutting it off but thats why it doesnt slip either. Look around the local auto parts or wallymart and you should find it.

And the grip glues are a real joke, at least the ones I have been ripped off trying.

Posted by: TheChknhwk

I have just used rubber cement in a tube, but I'm sure I don't ride as hard as you guys
