building a ramp, have a question?

we are building a ramp but i have a question, do you need to do anything to anchor it to the ground so it doesnt move when you hit it??????

Posted by: muff

if you're making it out of metal it will be plenty heavy enough

if you make it out of wood...well...dont use wood

Posted by: Juggalo

quad041, if you ever have any ramp building questions feel free to ask me on AIM, i think you have my screen name but if not its shaggs2dope2000

anyways to answer your question yes when you hit it it will move. our old one moved all over the place and it was real heavy too. for our rev 3 we're building we're making sort of a shark tooth/saw blade looking thing that hangs down on the bottom. \/\/\/\/\/ kind of like that ya know. should help it stay in place a lot better.

thanks guys, i have pics but i need my wife to resize them so i can post em, yea we'll have to do something so it doesnt move, thanks again

my first ramp never had any problems with flippin it was fine as long as it is pretty long

Posted by: swap

shift_dvs and myself welded 1/2" spikes about 4" long to anchor ours to the ground

Posted by: Rip_Tear

Thats a good idea Juggs... how about legs (like a ski pole, with the skirt thiny on it) on about a 45 degree angle off the back that stuck into the dirt, do you think that would be enough to hold it to the ground?

Posted by: Juggalo

yeah i think that would work too. but it might look a little goofy. it would kinda look like muffs ramp (no offense lol) which is why i like the anchor idea better plus its probably a little simpler. i was thinking maybe just get a couple railroad ties and weld em on and it will spike it into the ground.

oh my god im lovin this! all these ramps get me excited!!! lmao!

cant wait to see the finished product!

Posted by: QuadRacer041

those pics are about 2 weeks old, the vertical suports are in and they started putting in the cross supports for the ramps surface, ill have to get more pics

Posted by: Juggalo

lookin awesome man!

Posted by: muff

omg that thing is sweeet, we're gonna be building one like that next year

I gotta be the first to ask, how'd u bend the bars liek that?

Posted by: Rip_Tear

They probaly have a machine that heats them up and bends it. It looks good I also can't wait to see it finished!

Posted by: QuadRacer041

no, its not heated and bent. we made cuts in the steel every so many inches and then just bent it until the gap in the steel made by the cut is closed.

yup thats how we did it

did you cut every 6 inches? what size blade did you use? i assume you used a band saw?

Posted by: QuadRacer041

yes we used a band saw, not sure on the blade size and spacing, my brother in law and freind are doing most of the work. i can find out for u if u want though.

ill try to get over there tomarrow and get some more pics

Posted by: Wired

nah its alright i dont need exact specs. you guys going off of a rev1 ramp plan or dont you know?

Posted by: QuadRacer041

yea im pretty sure thats what plan they are using, its the one that u can print out or download for free from there web site, lol

Posted by: Juggalo

yeah its probably a rev 1. we bent our metal like that too. did you bend it in or out? they tell you to bend it in, but thats actually weaker than bending it out.

yea we bent it in, then welded em closed.

Posted by: muff

whats the dimentions on that sucka? next year we're gonna build one just like it

Posted by: Juggalo

yeah bending it out is stronger but thats ok cuz i'm sure it will still hold up since all the pros ramps are made like that! i can't wait till you get some pics of you jumpin it.

muff- go to www.fmxramps.com they have free rev 1 plans.
