im not exactly cheap but i wouldnt pay 600 bux for a program that i wouldnt use to its potential and use to only to screw around on. plus if you can get it free why pay

practice is the biggest thing. Maybe learning how to do a few things to get started but the rest is just experimenting learning what things do. I know jabberjaw made a post describing how to change the color of a frame if you wanna do a search for it. Also keep in mind you might need to change the light settings. WHen I change mine to "elka red" I first have to make it red and then change the light settings on that layer to hard light.
