my dad is wanting me to research the heck out of Raptors before he buys one. So does the Raptor still have tranny probs? Thanks for any info.

The tranny issue has been corrected on the new Raptor's, however, the starter issue has not. The sprag and one-way clutch are still going bad in a large number of Raptor's. Being a former Raptor owner, if you're looking for a sport quad with reverse I'd look into the Z400 or KFX400.

yeah the raptors are as narrow as a 300ex (so i have heard) so if your look for something with reverse i would look into a 400 Z/ KX

I have also seen a few of them i know jump and snap the axle. I know i saw 2 of them jump and the axle broke in the same exact spot, it was ont he right side right near the hub. This was on 2 raptors. They were havin nuthin but troubles. I say get a 400ex, or a z/kfx400

Sounds like your Dad is pretty smart. Perhaps he'll be even smarter and stay away from the Yamaha shop. Even if Yamaha repaired all of the Raptors problems, they still treated they're customers badly.

go to a yamaha forum and ask this question. talk to people who own a raptor. or just stay here and continue to hear one sided opinions. atv connection is a good place to start...stay away from the 01 model.

Reverse is so so f-ing overrated. I mean if i were going to buy a quad and i was looking at 2 different quads and they were the exact same in every aspect except one had reverse than sure i would get the one with reverse. Reverse isnt a big deal most of the time u could push it faster than you could put it into reverse and back it up. It is nice...yes that great....no. For me it would just be another thingh that could add weight and get all ****ed p in a crash) wrecking a lever or some crap like that)

i would go for a kfx400 before the raptor.............but the raptor is a good machine.

if i wear ur dad a raptor casue the transmission is junk!!!! my neighbor blew his trans like three times. he said he had enough of this s*it and he sellin it and buyng a z400. now i have a yamaha but the raptors suck!!!! if i was him i would buy a 400ex or a z400

Ok arent the ltz400 and kfx400 the same bike just different colors and light setup? To me on a sport bike honda knows what there doing.
Light bike no reverse. Where would you have time to put your bike into reverse on the motocross track. If you want a bike with reverse get a 2x4 or a 300ex.
If I want speed hmm 5 speed with reverse or 6 speed no reverse.
But hey go buy a kxf250 if you want a good bike. Ruin all these 400ex people. Trust me. why buy a bike for 4-8000 when you can get a 2000$ bike and put 6000$ into it.
