Rear brake question

I just bought a 01 400ex and it currently need rear pads, and my question is....is it normal for the rear brake lever to lock up or get stiff when no more pad is left on the brake? i looked at 2 400's and both with no rear pads had stiff lever arms. and i bought one that has the same prob.

I would guess that the reason the lever is stiff is that it has been sitting and is rusted up. If you are talking aboput the right foot pedal. Spray with oil and work it a few times and should work good. Pull the pin to help with getting it to move. If this is what you are talking about.

It moves but very stiff, like the piston is frozen. I am going to order some pads so i will be replacing them soon.
Does it matter what pads to use?

Get the heavy duty from any brand, but make sure that it is heavy duty.

Stintered metal is recommended for ATV's.

so these pads
EBC Brake Pad, Severe Duty
or these
EBC Brake Pad, Rear, Metal

and can i get the same ones for the front or you recomend a softer pad for the front?

The EBC pads that I have been buying for many years are the sinter metal ones. They are gold in color. Don't buy the gray or reg duty ones. The EBC sever duty ones are better, but the rep from EBC told me to just use the gold ones. He said that the sever duty ones in there test only gave just over 10% better wear. I use the same front and rear.

i got there sinter fronts and the sever duty for the rear 4 buck for 10% better where sure its only 4 bucks. i get the regular ones for the front incase the server ones are hard on the rotor. cheaper to replace one back one then 2 front ones.

I have never heard of anyone wearing out the front rotor. The only way that I have heard is someone vrashing or hitting a ock and bending the rotor. The rear is a different story. I will change rotors for the extra wear life of the pads.

I like useing braking brand pads there a semi metalic material it stops good and last farly well i like them.
