How should you clean a K&N air filter without the K&N cleaner? Can you just use dish soap?

Yes you can. I just use any de-greaser that's laying around in my shop then spray it down with the oil.

same here i use degreaser with all my filters

And if you use a water hose to spray it with, spray from the inside out. And not too much pressure.
