Ok, so I was out riding at the dunes last weekend and noticed a loss of power on the top end (very out of the norm) after about 20 min of riding when I rev up the motor dies and wont restart.

It's very odd because my headlights never dim, and the motor will crank strong and produce a fuel smell from the exhaust.

I put a new plug in and it made no difference. spark seems good, but...

I think the problem is electrical, but I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar problem and if I should look at replacing the coil, CDI, maybe even the kill switch?

IMO sounds like more of a fuel problem. Try pulling your air filter, and spray carb spray in the carb while trying to start the machine. If it trys to run, this could point you in the correct direction

We just fixed an 09 outlaw that was dieing about an a hour into a race every time. It would not restart unless it sat for ten minutes or so. once it restarts it will fail again if you try to run it hard. I traced it back to a failing stator .

sleddog66, I'll definately try that before I spend any money on parts.

Colby, that's pretty much how mines been acting. did you test output to find out it was failing?

Yes we ran it on the dyno until it failed and them went through the ignition system with a mag probe ( much faster than using a meter) until we found the stator was failing. We have the advantage of having a shop full of Outlaws . This customers outlaw has been really hot a few times and I think that lead to early failure on this part

I had a very similar problem, I found a broken wire on the regulator/rectifier. I don't know for sure if that was the problem, but it hasn't happened since.

The regulator sames to have no effect since the outlaw will run without it once its started

correct, the problem only starts acting up when i get above half throttle.

have you checked the throttle cable?....these po pos have a throttle safety switch that (if it gets wet or malfunctions) will kill the throttle above half way because it thinks its stuck at wot

You can bypass the throttle sensor by just unplugging it at the throttle housing

exactly and its more common of a problem with these popos than stators failing but anything can happen and at the end of the day its something easily overlooked and free to fix.

I've been lazy and haven't finished replacing my clutch discs so I could test. I should have a report soon.
