Spring O ring under bearing carrier seal?

Hello I was wondering if someone could tell me what the spring O ring is around the inside of the axle carrier on the chain adjuster side. I just burnt the other seal and pried it off but when i did the same to the other side i could see the spring oring inside the seal.
