fit or can it be made to fit an 08?
Anyone tried ?
Posted by: GE4x4
Nope.
Posted by: xtreme 250x
If you change out the tank and mounting tabs they will fit. The tank and seat are the two things you need to change to make it fit. 08 and 09 frames are identical. Some mounting tabs are the only diffence were the plastic fits. I priced it new plastic and seat tank. About a 800 dollar conversion.

I have thought about doing this as well. Do you have to torch the mounts off of the frame and then fab up new mounts for the tank and plastics?
Posted by: swopesy
i was told by rath that 08 and 09 frames are much different..
Posted by: JenniferRath
The plastic will not fit- frames are different- you need a frame , new gas tank and a new steering stem- new seat...the list goes on. Sorry!
Posted by: Polaris 450MXR
Sorry to say but They are the same frame with different mounting tabs. if you own a welder and are crafty it should be possible. i own both the 08 and 09. footpegs are exactly the same Frame is exactly the same, Different mounting tabs and locations, the pro Steering is a different mounting plate, gas tank is different and plastics are the same. It would be a little work but totlly doable. carb is a little different but I believe a lot of the Pro riders atleast with neatv have changed back to the 08 carb and petcock and eliminated the pulse pump on the 09. I did not change mine and it works great but I know they do change them. It would be a little undertaknig but totally possible and well worth the upgrade.

The blue wrench and a welder makes anything possible!

You need a B.F.H. all so

Ok I should have clarified...you can make the plastic fit...but you will be in for a few surprises...and additional work!!!
We switched two 08 into 09's...so i have the list of parts needed...
The plastic mounting tabs are different, gas tank mounts are different, all the electical mounts are different- the 08 gas tank wont fit so you need an 09 tank and then the 09 gas tank doesn't empty from the bottom anymore so you also need a fuel pump and an 09 carb set up for fuel pump.

what was the purpose of swtiching them Jen? any major advantage other then center of gravity and weight?
Posted by: TYLER329
The biggest reason would be the ability to move around on the quad easier instead of having that huge tank in the way. The weight savings was mostly in the steering. I plan to do the body upgrade this winter if I have the funds!

Tyler.......I just quoted a new 09 for 5999 up here in the Twin Cities....for that price you could get back to a straight axle!

My plan....
09 frame, front and rear fenders, side panels, seat, Rath Stem, IMS tank, 09 Tie Rods with ends.
Yokley was at my last race and i got quite a few ideas.
A: he is running a petcock off the IMS tank so i do not need the 09 Carb/fuel pump
B: he bolts his seat on so I do not need to spend money on the latch
c: He mods his seat quite a bit which I had heard about already.
I am excited about this as I am only 5'8" and have a hard time getting around on my 08.

you down? I had my IRS on hold all season. I had so much faith I can get this thing handling better, it was a mission that went on hold.....UNTIL YOU GUYS STARTED THESE THREADS lol.
No I am half tempted to buy stuff for the IRS also.

I honestly believe that an IRS sport quad is the thing to have but we just don't have the chassis figured out yet. I believe the machine to have would be a 2010 Outlaw 525 IRS with a chomoly frame, Fox Float Evols all the way around, Sonics swaybars front and rear, chromoly half shafts, carbon fiber airbox and then all of the other regular stuff that you have to have to race XC. If you could keep the thing around 365 lbs dry I believe this would be the machine to have for XC. All it takes is money and time (which I have none of either)! This is why it is easier to just get a SRA and put up with the rough ride and low ground clearance.

I guess i will have to build a Chromoly frame.
I have Custom Axis all the way around and I love them. Chromoly would make it lighter but you have to admit the Outlaw frames are pretty tough.
The Polaris racing team has some light weight axles. Ask Gallagher about them. I think you could probably chuck the stock ones up in a lathe and take some material out of the middle to lighten them up as nobody has ever broken one.
I am actually pretty glad there is somebody else so set on making the IRS work and having confidence in it.

Yeah I know, I have a pair of those axles. They were made in the Wyoming, MN R&D shop and I think there was only 5 pair made. They are only 1.5 lbs lighter but I think it gets multiplied when you are talking about rotational mass. I also got some R&D front hubs from Gallagher of which there was 4 sets made. Makes it steer way quicker but can be really twitchy.

the axles are rotational mass and roughly 1/2 the weight is un sprung as well. To top it off they are about as far from the center of gravity as anything on the machine. I think they are a great place to lose weight. Are those custom axles 1.5lbs lighter each or together? I have an 08 and love the machine but would like to drop ten pounds of each end. Its possible for sure, but it will cost some $. It always does.

Any word on the 2010 models yet? I heard that polaris and KTM are not together anymore? is there truth to that? Maybe the KTM engine was just a throw in motor so Polaris could fab up an incredible blow your socks off 450 and 700. Wouldn't that be nice.

yes the 2010 are out and they still have the KTM motor. What you heard was wrong.

You mean the nuckles are custom and make it steer differently? I have heard about those. I know Gallagher also had some custom hubs he made but they are all Honda pattern.
Posted by: TYLER329
I have his hubs on the R&D spindles. The spindles move the axle closer to the kingpin. The axles are 1.5 pounds lighter each. I can't wait to install them. I can get another set of axles if anybody wants em.

Tyler pmd you
Posted by: SSJEFF
how much for the axles?
Posted by: greenman
just wondering is it worth it if you bought the parts from polaris does any one know what is the retail cost to convert a 08 -to a -09 or just buy a new bike ?
Posted by: Outlaw19
to convert it from 08-09 , cost me about 1200cdn like 5% above dealer cost. I still used the 08 carb , took the 08 tank took the petcock out of it , made a plate for it , drilled holes in brand new 09 tank and routed fuel line from the tank to the carb . It was'nt to hard. Then cut and welded new tabs, I also cut the steering stem down an inch. When said and done my 08 which is now a 09 handles very well , the new ergonomics are way easier to ride then the 08 style. loved the 08 for style but love the 09 for its easy seating transitions
09 Outlaw 450 MXR
08/09 Outlaw 450 MXR
08 Outlaw 450 MXR

I am guessing around 3k for the parts at regular price. The frame alone is around 1k shipped. plastics and seat are about 311 per on bike bandit. then you need the seat latch hardware, the tank, hood side panels, bolts, quick nuts, have to figure out the petcock or get the fuel pump and new carb with the fuel pump drive on it, steering stem, tie rods and ends.
1k
311
311
311
all the rest.
Best bet is to wait till part out stuff on ebay and grab the parts then.
I wish someone would make a front lower stem mount to weld onto the 08 frame to make the new stem work.
Posted by: SSJEFF
Yokley used a stock tank also and put a petcock on it, he also put a quick fill on the top.
