hey my buddy has an 08 525xc and it has no top end and goes through a lot of oil, has any one had this problem and if so what should we start looking at first???

I pulled the spark plug and it was really black and caked in ****, does this mean the velves are toast or what.and also was wondering how much play should the timing chain have???
