just bought a suzuki 250 r it running about 60 65 now. i want to get it to running about 75 80 where do i start ?

well if you're just looking for top end speed just gear it up.

15 tooth front sprocket with like a 36 rear. that could get you close. only thing is that your low end power would suck.

what year is your bike?

Either something is wrong with it, or the gearing is lower than the stock 12-42. Stock that quad should do about 70. Check the sprockets. Either look for the stamping of number of teeth on the sprockets or count the teeth, so you know what you got. If they are still stock, wouldn't be surprised if the front sprocket teeth have some good curling going on! Both new sprockets and chain wouldn't hurt. Yes, best to replace all at one time. For sprocket size, as already stated you can gear up to increase top-end speed. But as also already stated, your low-end would suffer. I have a 14-38 on my worked LT. This leaves me happy with top-end, and low-end. On a stock engine, no way. You better make your starts going downhill, not ride woods and plan on going thru clutches.

My suggestion is go over this quad, complete refresh/ overhaul. Don't worry about top speed of 75-80 mph. Where are you going to do that anyway? Road (bad!) or dunes would be about it. Drag racing, you would def wanna go over this quad before doing that.

All this said, welcome to the QuadRacer world! You got yourself a fun quad, one that will put smiles on your face. But it will require a fair amount of attention.

Thanks for the imfo . It's my first quad ive ever own . The guy i bought it from says every thing was rebuilt last year new crank, piston, trans, new bearing .He used it for jumping.so he lost his job and sold it to me for 800.00 doller the only thing wrong is the stater needs replacing. How much more power would i get if i put in a 330 kit ?

my suzuki 250 r is a 1986 model.. Thanks for the imfo.Do you where i could get some white plastic for my 250r ?

Posted by: LTandRaptorider

Check on ebay. Or any of the off-road sites like Rocky Mountain or Dennis Kirk. They should list Maier plastics in white for your LT.

70 mph? considering that the top speed of a 500 is 79mph off the show room floor i highly doubt the 250 would be 70. My guess would be the 60ish range. I know the blaster top speed is around 50 and a banshee is around 73. The lt250 should be in the middle. remember the 85-86 motors were only 5-speed tranny's.

Yes, I was thinking of my 92 LT and it being a 6-speed. 87-92 indeed did about 70mph off the showroom floor.

Since antwon was banned, I guess he won't need our help on here anymore...

If this guy was still on here, we could ask him about the Banshee top speed and my LT's top speed. After him bragging it up, we drag raced on a dirt-gravel road. After passing him I crossed over to his lane... And oops, he came back with a broken headlight from my roost. Yes, I can be a prick sometimes... But I heard no more bragging.

I have a 87 LT and contacted trinity they said 295 is the biggest big bore they do while still reliable but like I said mines a 87 I would focus on nice portwork head work and carb for more power LTs arent really known to be big bore quads from what Ive seen

lol, that's my method... less talk more walk! Good job!

Watch out for that ban hammer!

You got it right Tommygunz, Big bores are not popular with the 250's. the larger the bore the harder it is to get the transfer ports timed. Not to mention a custom pipe will be needed. You can can get around 301cc out of 72mm bore x 74mm stroke with a modded Honda sleeve but you'll spend a ton of cash doing it. And i'm not sure if you'll have to trench the cases or not for rod clearance.
