How do i clean my Outerwear Pre-Filter?

I have a K&N air filter on my Z400 with an "Outerwear" Pre-Filter. I have the K&N Recharger kit to clean the filter, but what is the best way to clean the Pre-Filter?

I use warm water with a little bit of dish wash liquid. I soak it then rinse it off with light water and let dry in the sun. This works a few times then it will start to let in water.(still stops dirt though) I called outerwears because I also have one on my airbox and it didn't stop water after a while. They told me they do wear out after a while. the one on my k+n is still good after almost 2 years though.

I've always used Simple Green and hose.
