Does anyone think a 250 ex would be right for a 12 yr old boy with limited experience on atvs? The 90 seems a little small for him. But i dont know if the 250 is too much without a throttle limiter on it. Anyone out there with a 12 yr old on a 250?

I'm 12 and i ride a 250ex. I had limited experience but it seems to be good quad for me.

My son jr.Rat, responded to your post. I bought him an 06 250ex, it is his first quad and he had very little riding experience. He spent a little time on a friends 50cc. My boy has really learned alot with his 250ex. He has been riding it for about a year now and handles the power very well. I do not think the 250 is to fast for him, but he also never rides without me there to control where we ride and what kind of conditions we ride on and in. All in all I think the 250ex is a great starter quad and a perfect size for my 12 yr old.

What year did the 250 come out with the sport clutch, i would like to ride it when he is not, but he doesnt like to use a clutch and i do. Thanks for all the advice.

I believe the sport clutch started in the 06 models, and if I'm not mistaken I think there's a conversion to make the semi automatic into a sport clutch.

every 250 from 06 up has the sportclutch and yes i belive the conversion is possible

86250rider was going to do it but i havent heard much from him lately

I bought a new 07 250ex for my 13 yo and wife to learn on. Seems okay for them...

oh yeah definently great begginer quad gobut maybe get a 300ex so he could learn to use the clutch u probably could get a 300ex way cheaper than a 06 250ex good luck

Does a 300ex have a sport clutch, because he is horrible with a clutch. I found a 2008 250ex for 2400.00

I could be wrong, but I think only the 250ex has the sport clutch. My family still has issues w/ down shifting. I would buy the 08. I paid a little more than that for a new 07 last week.

Buy the 08 for $2400, good price. The 300ex does not have the sport clutch and they usually run a bit higher in price.

Well, the 08 250ex was a salvage title atv and i couldnt come up with the cash. I am probably going to buy an 07 this weekend at a dealer that has a leftover for 2700. I am still concerned as an overprotective mom that it will be too fast for my kid. Anyone ever hear of a throttle limiter for one of these, or can i rig my own?

i wish i was at home becuase i think there might be a screw in the right throttle assembly that might be a limiter

but my quad is about 100 miles away and i wont be there for 4 more days

That would be great if you could let me know. I'm picking up his new 07 tomorrow. Not sure if we are going to ride this weekend or not (yeah right) but i will check out the throttle tomorrow when i get it.

i say get him a 300 im 11 and ive had my 250ex for 2 yrs and its gettin to slow and small for me.....arcticat has a dvx300 its an automatic sport quad and it seems really cool and im prob gonna get a 400ex

Did you put wheel spacers on yours? I went with the 250 anyway, in a couple years he might not even want to ride anymore, got some holeshot XCTs for the rear and looking at some spacers on ebay to widen it a bit.

no i did not put wheel spacers on mine but i did flip the reaar wheels around and its wider and i have maxxis razr's and there great!

i agree with them skip the 250 i got it when i was 10 at like 11 i thought it was to slow when i turned 14 last year right before i got a 400 and now im almost 15 and i have a yamaha 450 all i need now

250ex is not that fast of a bike but i would say get a 300ex because with them you can change gear to limit spped but still have smaller or bigger tires on rear just what ever you get look on ebay i found for $25 the other day front spacers (they were + 5) and work good on any quad

well a misconseption is age, thats not really the limiting factor i was 11 when i bought my first quad which was a 250ex i was also about 5'5-5'7 and weigh like 130-150 now if your son 5'1 90pds id say probably not. Also another thing is of course quads are dangerous how responsable is he and does he have a good head on his shoulders if he is going to hot dog around and do stupid stuff well the anwer is obvious

My son was 10 when he started riding my 2007 250EX. He was ok with the power, but the bike was a little big for him. He just liked to putt around on it.

If you have the money to upgrade later, I would say go ahead and get it.

But I bought two 07 250EXs and two 07 90exs.
My daughter is still JUST FINE on the 90.
My son bottoms out that 90ex all day long. He is always in 4th gear with wide open throttle and it's not enough. So for your 12year old, I would say the 90 is a no go.
My wife is still just fine on her 250ex.

Myself, I have outgrown the 250ex, not in ability, but in power. I have gotten half way up hills and that thing will stall out due to lack of power. The 300 may be better, but if I knew then what I know now, I would have gotten a 400 or a 450r for myself. My buddy just keeps pulling with his 400 as I am rolling backwards down the hill. It's sad. But I can't afford to buy an upgrade, so I just go around the hills now. That's sad too. hehehe

Even if your kid is terrible on a clutch, I say force him to learn it and learn it well. This wussification of America is sick. Don't let him opt out of learning a valuable skill. Soon he will be driving a car. You gonna buy him an automatic cuz he can't clutch? That's a disservice to a young man if you ask me.

PS, my daughter flipped her 90. It landed on top of her. She was airlifted to Phoenix in a helicopter. Ruptured spleen and a suspected broken spinal cord. $80,000.00 and a week later she walked out of the hospital doing just fine. So getting a 90 doesn't really remove the risk, as much as it limits the riders options. The reason she flipped is because she hit a narrow dip, the suspension rebounded so hard that it popped over on her
