I'm new to the 300ex stuff my buddy told me it took a little over 2 qts of oil with a filter so I put two qts of oil in it and it over filled it by about 3/16 on an inch. We practiced it Sunday and I got oil coming from the top of the motor and the breather at the bottom rear of the head. Is it just over full or should I check the rocker covers and rocker box for leaks. Is there a vent on top of the rocker box....??
Thanks

Mike did you change the filter when you did the oil, if you remember I said a little over 2qts with a filter change, if you don't change the filter it will take just a shade less than 2 qts. There should be a breather tube on the top right rear of the rocker cover, also check all the bolts that that bolt down the rocker cover, they are known for coming loose, just be VERY careful when thightening them, they strip very eaisley. Hope that helps, give me a call if you need anything.

hey,
I have the repair manual for the 300ex and it says 1.6 litres when the filter is changed. I'm canadian but I'm pretty sure a quart is close to a litre if not it's a little less so DON"T put in more than 1.7 quarts! i'm 99.99% sure thats the problem!!

Thanks guys.....Kevin I changed the filter and that's why I put 2 qts in it. And it's over full. I checked into it today the motor holds 2.11 qts dry after the motors had oil in it with a filter it takes 1.7 qts. for a oil change I guess there's about a half of qt that you can't get out unless you take it apart. I'm going to check the rocker cover bolts drain out the 1/2 qt. and go for it.
Thanks Canadian dude....lol. How about them Pittsburgh Penguins it's playoff time in the burgh.

That is probably right, I'm not sure about the liters to qts thing either, but I know I have always put 2qts in with a filter change and never experienced any problems. But I always made sure when I drained the oil the machine was setting very level so maybe I was getting a little more drained out, I don't know. But like I said never had any issues with leaks running 2 qts. always put me right at the full mark.

No clue I know it's over full by a bunch I'd say a 1/2 qt. It must have not been level when Kyle drained it. I did'nt think it was a big deal but I guess it is.... it may have nothing to do with the oil change and the rocker covers loose...?? It's not that bad but it's there.

Yea they are known for leaking around the rocker cover, because of the bolts being stripped or loose, knowing who's quad that was i dout their stripped, Steve's to particular, LOL. Oh well still hoping to make steel city this weekend, looks like great weather.

I been hearing if it's not leaking it's not a 300.....lol. We'll get it fixed before Steel City. It's running great and Kyle's getting better every time he rides. He raced Westmoreland Friday night and practice at latrobe Sunday and he rode hard both times a lot of jumps not many stright aways. He may have knocked the rocker covers loose.

Well I found the leak......the vent hose was out of the rocker box. I cleaned it up and locktited back in. I'm going to extend the one from the back of the cyl. cable tie it to the the top one and end them right on top of the chain.......like my buddy Dave P. told me to.......self lubricating chain............lol
I may just be learning about the 300's and don't have a clue but I can make a killer pork chop.........
