replace oil filter without draining oil?

My wife completed her break-in mid-way thru our desert trip last weekend. After 10 hours I drained the oil but could not remove the filter by hand. I'll need to get a filter wrench for that. Put in fresh oil and let her ride 1 more day with the same filter. Now that we're home I want to replace that oil filter because I'm sure it's full of junk.

Can I do this w/o draining the oil first?
