07 pred 50cc-help! need more ground clearance

We have 3 predator 50cc for our kids. They are not ready to move up, these fit them perfectly. However, they need more ground clearance for trail riding. We made skid plates for them which did help some from getting hung up on rocks.

Can we just put larger tires on to get the ground clearance or will other mods need to be made? Will tire size effect the speed/transmission? Anyone ever modified theirs or have some knowledge of what we need to do?
