What have you guys used. My dam* oil plug was covered with threads when I was gonna change my oil the other day. I went to a bolt place to get a tap and he told me to tap it to a 3/8 pipe tap and gave me a small plug for after. What have you guys used?

Ive seen a hex bolt the same size as the original plug JB welded in place that was drilled and tapped for a smaller bolt in the center of it that became the drain plug,helicoils,the tapping to SAE thread like you have stated and oversized self threading plugs.I have used the last one myself.trouble with the oversized plug is they are way too long.I had to start it and thread in as far as it would go,pull it out and grind it down,thread it back in as far it would go,pull it out,etc.... until it was sealed against the case and was the same length as a stock plug.

A gu yat the local bolt shop said it would have to be tapped to a pipe tap in order to be leakproof. He said helicoils and other taps would leak. Anyone know if its true. I alrady retapped it ti 1/2in but it was too small and threads barely caught. A 3/8 pipe tap is way bigger than that and I was gonna try to avoid it if i can, next size up in tap would be a 14mm. Ive read other threads on this and may go to a parts house and find a self tapping plug.

ive used a bolt from a small block chevy oil pan in 2 motors and its worked for me, just had to cut the end of the bolt off.

If you know a good aluminum tig welder that knows how to use "specialty shielding gases" they can repair it for you.

I seem to remember reading, years ago, that the fix for this is to tap that hole for an LT250R drain bolt.

I have heard the same thing. I haven't tried it, but I know the LT bolt is a good bit bigger.

think I might remember something about them having course and fine threads (but dont hold me to that) been quite a few yrs since we had to do this to a friends R, worked like a charm!

The LT drain plug is a 14mm 1.25 pitch
The TRX250R is a 12mm 1.5 pitch
The LT plug would work or you could just Heli coil it back to 12mm 1.5. I have heli coiled them before and it did not leak.

i went to the napa store and started with a 1/2" self tapping drain plug,seems i don't have a bottoming tap, and then had them dig out the shortest drain plug they could find.worked good.that sucks it didn't work for you.they do sell oversize drain plugs, maybe get a 1st over or 2nd over 1/2"plug???
When i went through this, my dealer told me about some "slick" tool/process that was sold at fastenal... maybe give them a call.If i swing into the dealer, i'll ask them.good luck

Guys I went to auto zone today and got an oversize 1/2 plug for it. I think its gonna work. Thanks for the responses

I copied this from the CT Racing website.
"If you have stripped a 12mm oil drain bolt (TRX250R) you can simply re-tap the hole to 14mm X 1.25 and replace the bolt with a Suzuki LT250R drain bolt"

MY NEW PLUG IS WORKING SO FAR AND SEEMS TO HAVE GREAT THREADS BY LOOKING AT IT. MY NEXT PLAN WOULD BE TO TAP IT TO 14MM. THANKS GUYS
