how hard would it be to put a sx motor in the xc? i know i would have to buy a new rear end and motor mounts but is that it?? does the sx have any different mounting points to the frame?

Well, the SX motor has different mounting points BUT besides that, there really shouldn't be much more things to change. The frame in the XC and in the SX is the same so...
