650 or 500 for XC racing.

Is the 650 to much for XC racing, or would the 500 be better? There is no class resrictions on displacement so. I've been racing XC and riding for 6 plus years, but only on sport quads never Utes.
Thinking about trying something different this year, and everyone seems to think Can Ams are the fastest. I figure if the motor is strong out of box I'll just have to make it handle and add some armor. Thanks Joe
