I've been looking into buying a yfz to race harescrambles. I have some knowledge about them and their problems, however i was looking for more imput on their problems right from the factory. I am particularly interested in buying an early year yfz due to their price difference from a newer one. Any imput would be appreciated on problems of differeent year models and ways to fix these problems. Thanks

You deffently want the oil mod done. Jetting is an issue. I just bought my 450 for 5,500 OTD. New 07 bought in feb. 2008

ya the oil mod is a must! Last year right before winter i seized up my engine cuz of that and now we r rebuilding the whole engine cuz of it! Its worth the 200 bucks!

What exactlly is the "oil mod" and on what years does it need to be done?
Thanks

its an oil jet that coats the bottom of the piston. the 04s-06s dont have it but the 07+ do.

You would not want to fo the "oil mod", you would want to do the "07 oil upgrade"
From what i have learned the "oil mod" is only a hole drilled in your engine block with a jet placed in it. That in turn can cause a drop your oil pressure.
Yamaha reconized the problem with the lack of lubrication to the wrist pin and crank bearing in the 07 model. The "07 oil upgrade" is the oil squirter and high velocity pump from the 07 model to correct the problem the right way.
So that is what i have learned about it and that is my suggestion if you want to listen.

How much money am i loking at spending to install the 07' oil pump on a 04'-06' yfz? Also could it be done on your own, or would you recommend taking it to a dealer...

It costs $200 and you send out your clutch case cover j&T products to have the new oil squirter installed on it profesionally. They then send you back a new 07 pump along with your case.
To install the new oil pump you will need to remove your clutch basket to get to the pump. They explain it in detail and have pictures of the procedure to help along. Here is a link to their website, http://www.jtatv.com/yfz450-oil-upgrade-kit.htm
I have not done this yet so i can't say how hard it is to install, but i plan on doing it at the end of the month when i have more money.
