I have a 2006 yfz 450. I am going install a mod quad filter system I was going to install a thunder products dial a jet! Does any body have any experiance with the dial a jet on a yfz 450?

the dial a jet is supposed to take place off the regular main jet and it has a dial to adjust for all alttitudes and motor mods with a screw driver in about a minute. It sounds great and one of my friends runs it. But I am looking for more feed back.

I don't think it replaces your main jet, it's just an addition to the carb.

So in other words this would be good for someone like me that rides in the desert at say 100ft above sea level and rides at my house which is 4500ft above sea level?

I had one on my sled, and it worked OK. On a quad, I would be a little skeptical about the dirt an atv is exposed to. There are alot of little holes that need to be kept clean for it to work correctly. I was having problems with the dust from the belt, messing it up.
IMO........ Unless you are constantly going from 500 ft. to 5000 ft. you don't really need it on a 4 stroke. Just jet it for the higher altitude without your air box lid, then when you ride at the lower elevation, put the lid back on, or just jet for the middle altitude.

The little particles of sand would reak havoc.

We live in washington and occasionally ride our YFZ's at St. Anthony's without re-jetting.

What would you recommend for jetting? I have a mod quad k&n kit I am puting in and a leo vinnci slip on. I ride moses lake and sand lakes alot and we will be doing St Anthony's in June.

I set a YFZ up last summer with those same options.
165 main
45 pilot
NCVQ Needle. clip in slot #3 down from the top

And the Boyensen Quickshot smoothed out the bog on the bottom. Or you could just change the leak jet, but I have not personally messed with them.

Did you have to mess with the air fuel mixture at all? And were you running air box lid or not?

I'm in Oregon running the dunes almost every weekend. I have an 07 450 with a power now, mod quad filter, and a LRD pro 2 slip on. I'm running a 165 main and i believe a 45 pilot. I was HIGHLY recommended to get the JD jet kit. I just placed my order waiting for it to show up. I've heard bad things bout the dial jet. Guy i talked to is a local mechanic and racer. Knows his stuff with the yamaha's. Check out JDjetting.com

I don't run with the lid, but at home I'm lean enough that I can, when it's real muddy. I also use a piece of foam on top of the air box when it's not bad enough to use the lid.

I do mess with the air screw from time to time, depending on the conditions, I move it in or out 1/2 a turn at a time. Spend a little extra on the air screw by getting a Zip-Tye. The MSR ones tend to fall out.

I have 1 carb that has the JD kit in it. I works well, but I can't really tell if it's that much better than just buying a NCVQ needle and the single jets.

If it's runnung too "rich", why do you want to go to a bigger main jet?

Do you mean "lean"?
When we ran the LRD pipe, I had a 190 - 195 main jet to get it to run, and I never could get the YFZ to run smmoth on the bottom. In fact, that was the reason I bought the JD jet kit in the first place.
I'm not knocking the JD kit, and it's a very good choice for someone that only has the stock set up.

IMHO..... I think you just need a little "tweak" or adjustment on your clip position and/or the air screw.

In JD's kits, the jets are the same as stock, just different size. Only the needle is slightly different, and it comes with two needles. One for summer, and one for winter.

In your case the JD jet kit is a good option because on the '06 or newer, the stock needle only has 1 slot.
For about $30 you can buy a NCVQ needle, and the Jet's you need from your local dealer. I think Enumclaw Yamaha even stocks the NCVQ needle.

yeah Sorry i meant lean. I'm running alot quicker and smoother with a dirty air filter. I tried needle clip #3 and wasnt happy got better with 4. It Runs really smooth in all gears just want more top end.

Bigger main jet. LRD pipes like lot's of fuel. Start with a 190. You may even be able to run a 200.
If you want a little more top end, but still want it to run good at higher elevations, stay with 185 - 190.

I installed a JD jet kit per the instructions I installed a 45 pilot and a 170 main and set there needle on the 5th clip. It seems to run very good but it still has that little sputter in the low end. What should I do to fix that?

Change the leak jet or install a Boyensen Quickshot.
