Stuck in Reverse

My buddy has a 2002 or 2003 Sportman 400. It keeps getting stuck in reverse. To fix it we've just put a wrench on the shaft to shift it back to neutral and then it will work fine for awhile then do it again. It happened 3 times in one day last weekend. How do I fix this problem?

The bellcrank on the shaft is probably stripped, take the nut off and and pull the aluminum piece off the shaft. There are splines in the aluminum piece that are designed to strip. Cheap and easy fix if that is your problem. While you have it apart I recommend taking the cover off the shaft and filling it with grease. Water gets in there and it can rust making it very hard to shift.
