How loose should the rod be, i mean i can move it side to side like maybe a CM, I am doing a top end rebuild with a HC piston and was wondering if my rod is bad. The cylinder wall and piston was scored what could cause that?

As long as there isnt any freeplay between the rod and crank pin its fine. Its normal for it to move slightly side to side on the crank pin, but not much. As far as the scoring on the piston and cylinder, its mostly due to worn rings.
