I know there is probably a thread that answers my q, but i dont have the time to look, so how reliable are these, like a 400ex or ?????. I might enter the blue soon, need some encouragement

The YFZ450 is a very reliable quad. They are as reliable as a 400EX. The thing to consider when buying any high performance 450 is the maintenance. It is more involved than the 400EX. If the maintenance is not done the reliability goes out the door and the repairs get costly. Again, that goes for any 450, not just the YFZ. As for the YFZ against the other 450s, I still pick the YFZ.

What he said. Its all in how you take care of it and maintenance it. The YFZ450 is a great quad and when I buy another quad it will be another YFZ450. I will not trade my yfz450 for anothing.

I agree!!!! The biggest thing is keeping your air filter clean, and changing your oil. These things will run forever if you keep up on the maintenance right

so really all you have to do regularly is change oil and clean the air filter? I would do that anyways. You dont have to always check valve clearance?

The YFZ is not as reliable as a 400ex. Not a chance. I'd much rather have a YFZ than an EX, but I've come to terms with the fact that since the YFZ has titanium valves, a higher compression ratio, and a valvetrain containing bearingless rotation points for the non-driven ends of the cams, that there is no way in heck that it's as reliable as a 400. Not a chance. If both bikes receive adequate maintenance per the user manual, I've got money on the YFZ DEMANDING engine service years before the 400. I've also got money on the YFZ being much more likely to experience catastrophic engine failure before the EX. It's not LIKELY, it's just much MORE likely. In my opinion, it's worth the cost, but I had to set something straight there. Take a survey of your local quad speed shop. I'm sure they'll offer the same opinion if they've had enough experience.

I live on a farm and like being able to just go and jump on my quad and go, I dont have the skills or the shop to rebuild an engine or adjust valves and what not, my original thought was to get a 400ex, and I think I will stick to that plan, my cousin has a 300ex and i really like it, but i wanted something bigger. I think i will stick to the 400ex

Please do not buy a 400EX. Yeah it's a Honda, it'll run forever, but that thing is slow as ****. I just bought it this winter as my first quad and it blows ***. As for not having a shop to adjust valves... I live in the bush, farm area's also, I only have sheds. Adjusting valves isn't very hard.

Go with a 450 or anything bigger. Outlaw 525 is nice, but of course polaris, and 700R is a great machine. If you want to go with Honda then at least go the 450. That 400EX maxes out so quick and has no low end NOR high end power.

I have to respectfully disagree with the above post. Is the 400ex slower than the 450's....sure. But the 400ex is a VERY reliable maching that can hold its own. I have an aftermarket exhaust and rejet and that does help quite a bit with the low-end grunt on the 400ex. I really do like my 400 and good deals can be found with them now that the 450s have become more popular. Just my 2 cents! Chad

Well if it is a 04 05 or 06 YFZ then make sure it has the 07 oil mod cuz i have a 04 YFZ and the engine just seized up cuz i never put the 07 oil mod on it.
