2005 Pred 50 wont shut off?

My son was riding his predator 50 around the yard, when he pulled in the garage it was idleing higher than normal and it wouldnt shut off with the key? I pulled the teather and it still kept on running. I ended up putting on the choke and it killed the engine. Any ideas on what it could be? Or what to check? Thanks in advance, Patrick
