05 rincon in shop with a bad tick

We have a 05' Rincon in the shop that has a bad tick, but it almost goes away when engines gets up to temp. Any suggestions, The guy that brought it in said that his buddy replaced the guides, but after looking there is no way he could have done that without removing head. First of all am I wrong can it be done without doing that, and secondally, any idea what the tick is?
