I bought a used 2003 300ex and the previous owners must have chiseled out the welds on the factory muffler, because there's no spark arrestor there.

It's fine when I go dune riding as spark arrestors aren't required, but it is required when I'm on the trails.

How much work is it to install a stock 400ex or 450r muffler on the 300ex? I can get those pretty cheap.

I'd rather not purchase a new stock muffler just to go out riding on the trails.

What constitutes a "spark arrestor"?? Just some wire mesh across the opening of the exhaust?

Yes, actually you can just install SS/alum screen material found at any hardware store.

Make sure it's Stainless Steel or aluminum though, as regular steel will rust out under that heat in a hurry. I'd also get a coarser mesh as to not disrupt flow any more than the baffled exhaust already does.
