K&N's are a lot easier to clean, and I personally run one, but uni or no toil air filters filter better(less air flow, less dirt gets through). For a 250ex, get a k&n, ditch the lid, and put on a slip on muffler and it's about as modded as you can get without opening up the motor. Make sure you jet it after throwing the lid away. You can also yank the baffle, but you lose bottom end power. A slip on is a way better way to go.
