Clutch or gear problem?

We got the blaster put back together for the first run after the rebuild and when we fired it, it started making a weird sound. It sound like metal against metal but it's not like a grinding, just kind of that high pitch kind of ratel. It only does it when in neutral with the clutch out. If you pull the clutch in it doesn't do it and it doesn't do it when in gear either... Help please?
