With the air box lid off and the foam missing from the filter on my 88 300 fourtrax cause it to run lean and require it to be half choked to idle? Or is it just dirty jets?
(bike won't run with out choke half on)

Yes. That will absolutely lean it out. Running lean like that will eventually cause all sorts of nasty things to happen to the inside of your motor....burnt pistons, burnt valves......not to mention the fact that with the airbox cover and filter missing you are sucking all sorts of abrasive trash into your motor. You need to replace the cover and filter.

Well I don't run the bike like this. It's just one that i'm rebuilding and was thinking that might be the problem and didn't just want to start throwing parts at it.
