my first oil change today i had put a little over 2 quarts into my 400ex. the dipstick looked full. bout a hour later sounded like i had a lifter tick or something similar i checked my oil again and it was over full. could this ticking be caused from the oil overfill?

yes, to much oil will also cause ur atv to burn more oil

I just did an oil change on my 03 400ex and the book said to use 1.8 qts. I've done 2 qts before and it always ends up being too much.

Did you pull the crankcase bolt and drain it too? If you didn't, that would explain why it's over serviced.

always when u change oil make sure you drain from the engine also on 400ex's then it calls for 1.8 quarts add that much then to check oil the atv must idle for about 5 minutes to be accurate on the dip stick or you will over fill almost everytime
