I have an 01 with 2300 of motor work that was just done, including the clutch and 1st+2nd gear... I bought the quad for 1600. So far ive heard nothing but bad about them. Scraptor, Craptor... Ive heard it all. Its fast as hell but im really scared that is gonna cost me a fortune if it breaks. Whats common to go on these things?????

Yes, the rod will grenade and send the piston through the seat and take off your nuts. You should sell it to me for $1000 asap!

J/K. If you got the tranny fixed the next thing is the starter clutch. Go with an L&A one way when it goes out. Alot better design and also a few ounces lighter than the stocker.

Make sure the clamps that hold the carbs on are tight. In 01 they had a few problems with either the clamps being too loose or the idle was too low or both, the engine would backfire through the carb and blow them off the boots. Just make sure they are tight or even replace them with actual hose clamps.

Stock A-arms bushings would wear pretty bad. When they go out replace them with actual bearings and keep them greased.

Not a problem, but a suggested upgrade would be a prodesign air filter system. It uses clamps to hold it on instead of the airbox lid.

Get rid of the parking brake switch on the handlebars if it still has it. They would stick and throw an ignition rev limiter on. Gets frustrating to figure out whats wrong if you don't know.

Also, bypass the gear position sensor on the drivers side of the transmission. It will send a rev limiter for reverse which is a pain in the arse when you really need to go backwards. I think the 01's might not have this anyways, dunno.

These are the only "problems" that I can think of right now. Other than that, put on some good suspension and ride.

homer is right on with the exception of the timing chain, i don't know if this is an 01' problem or all, it is rare but i know of two in my area that broke. if you had all that work done i am sure your mechanic inspected if not replaced it. also you must know about the 01' gears, you only replaced 1st and 2nd? i am sure that the new gears will break as well. i was stubborn and stuck with the 01' gears 3 times, one set from Fortin Racing (total overpriced junk) and two sets from Yamaha. i had my mechanic replace every single part inside the tranny all 3 times. i do not ride like a raped ape, i am just average, i finally went with an 02' gear set and have not had a problem since.

Basically everthing that you guys have warned me about has been replaced. From the gears in the tranny to the starter clutch and even the crank bearings. The guy i bought the quad off just gave me a recipt of 2300 of work just done to this thing. It has even had all 4 wheel hubs replaced...... And NO, I wont sell it for a $1000. I paid 1600 for it and i think i got a deal..... Although, I have been having trouble with my carbs poppin off the manifolds?????? I replaced the factory clamps with normal ones and it still happend again....!! what the hll should i do???? A friend told me to use a wider clamp and i shouldnt happen again.... Ne one have a steering stem in good shape they wanna sell????? Thanks for all the advice guys!!!! oh and P.S. i like reverse....It come in handy

You need a set of carb boots from an 02-05 raptor or get a set of UPP aftermarket boots. The UPP are better but the factory units will work also. The 01's are known for this problem.

Sorry to hear you've had such rotten luck.

Posted by: 01probchild660

the boots that i have on it now are from an 03 660. when i bought the quad it had some homemade setup with kehin39mm FCR carbs on it. so i bought new air tubes, manifolds, and a carb setup on ebay...

Posted by: MadDog56

Sorry, didn't see the Keihin carb part of it. The oem carb boots and UPP ones can't handle a carb bigger than 35mm, that's why it's falling apart.

If you're going to use the Keihin carbs you need the trinity FCR intake, trinityracing.com. They'll also be able to help you figure out your intake situation.

You said you bought a carb setup on ebay, did you buy new carbs or just a new intake or something?

Posted by: 01probchild660

Im running factory carbs. the FCR's were on it when i bought it. But the guy had a homemade intake setup. so i bought new carbs, tubes, and manifolds.... my fcr's are sitting in a box until i decide what to do with them. i checked trinity's website. ill im findin is a k&n airfilter with the Trinity adapter... Ive been told its a waste to run the39's without getting the head ported. Is that true???

Posted by: MadDog56

They don't have it on their website, I just provided it so you could get their phone number.

Carbs that big without any porting is a waste, and too much carb.

If your boots are still popping off then you've either got a jetting problem or the carb boots are too worn to hold on.

Posted by: 01probchild660

im just gonna look for some wider clamps. I dont think that ne thing is wrong with my jetting. the bike runs strong, and doesnt seem to be running rich at all.... the only time they pop out is when i run at a high speed for a good period of time. im thinkin that its just from the vibration or sumthin... thanks for the advice!!

Posted by: MadDog56

If they only pop off after high speed runs then I'd wager that it's the popping/backfiring off deceleration that is causing it, and that's caused by lean jetting.

Well the redneck that owned the bike b4 me thought that it'd be a great idea to take the baffle and spark arrestor out of the exhaust (STUPID loud). So the bikes been backfiring since i bought it.It has no back pressure, it only happens when downshifting, or decelleration, almost in every gear. Its quite annoying...... ive got quite a few things to fix on the this quad b4 i deem it reliable!!!!! I was startin to think that I shoulda bought a honda till i talked to you guys...... Seems to me that I should be alright once I fix some of the stupid stuff. HOPEFULLY.....
