Adjusting valves - warm or cold engine?

Since metal expands when it's hot, is it necessary to warm up the engine before performing a valve adjustment or should they be adjusted cold? (I have a 250EX)

Thanks,
Dan

You always want to adjust valves with the engine cold. The purpose of the gap is to compensate for the heat expansion of the valves.

He is correct, the Honda ATV's are done cold, but there are some engines that are adjusted WARM. Always look in the owners book, or call a dealer if your not sure. If you adjust them cold, and the engine calls for it to be done warm, the valves will be too tight and you will proubly burn them and cause yourself a big bill.
