HIDY HONDA POWER SPORTS on ebay has the kit new style 400ex
Posted by: slim_shawn
i seen the kit for the new style 400ex plastics, but i really like the look of the 450r plastics better
Posted by: JPC2075
i havent seen it for the 450r yet only for the new 400ex it looks the same except for the head light i think
Posted by: slim_shawn
the headlight is the same, the plastics and gas tank are different
Posted by: JPC2075
check this out on ebay it looks good paste this number in the search 200177585242
Posted by: slim_shawn
thats the style i dont want. i looked on ebay and i can buy all the plastics, headlight and gas tank and seat for like around 600 or 700 if i buy them all seperate. then i would just have to make all my own brackets
Posted by: slim_shawn
well, got the rear fenders, front fenders, gastank, seat, and headlight off a 2005 450r on ebay for 300 bucks. so they should be here in a week or 2. if anyone else is considering doing this or wants progress photos and the steps and customizing i am gonna be doing, just let me know and i will post as it is all getting done. mine is a 2001 416ex with a whole lot of work done to it

dude, when your done, show me the step by step and what you had to do.
I had a similar question a long time ago, but no one had an answer..
The 450r plastics look alot sportier.
Especially the rear

Im very interested, please keep us updated!
Posted by: slim_shawn
alright, i will do a step by step with lots of pics. as soon as they get here i am starting. so hopefully this week coming they will be here
Posted by: procircuit406ex
any updates?
Posted by: slim_shawn
still waiting for the plastics to get here. i live in alberta, canada so it usually takes around a week and a half for the stuff to get here. i will be doing it as soon as they get here though
Posted by: mitchamus
Ya cant wait for the updates. I been interested in this for a while.
Posted by: slim_shawn
i am going to start taking it apart today. i am gonna run the battery in the airbox too. so i will take pics of that too for you guys. i am also gonna clean up the frame and paint it red while i have the plastics off
Posted by: zdowell
That should be pretty sweet project. Make sure you take lots of pictures. Take pictures of tabs you have to fab or anything else you have to cut off, weld or duct tape? ha ha. Cant wait to see it.
Posted by: slim_shawn
i am gonna do it step by step for anyone else who wants to do it. that means every little thing from a welded on bracket to a screw i have to put somewhere to help the plastic sit right. i am starting with the before pic, as it sits right now, and everything in between till it is finished
Posted by: zdowell
that is awesome. That should look just great when your done. Maybe I wont buy a 450r next year, maybe ill just make this one look like one instead.
Posted by: JfromChatt
Sounds sweet! Want to sell your 400 plastics???
Posted by: slim_shawn
ya, i will sell the 400 plastics, they are professionally painted black, i have airshrouds too, cause they wont work with the 450r plastics, and i have a brand new factory fx gripper seat cover. make me a reasonable offer for them. shipping might get kinda expensive cause i live in alberta canda, but i will get a quote on shipping if you are serious about buying them
Posted by: Hondamaster5505
I am DEFINITLY doing this once you get a step by step goin.
Can anyone photoshop this possibly? So we can kinda get an idea what it'll look like before he does it?
Posted by: 440challenger
So im assuming your using a 450r tank also? Im not knocking your idea at all and i think its great your stepping up to the plate to try it BUT: The 450 top frame tube slopes downward which fits the gas tank. On the 400 the ,if you put the 450 tank on it,it might be stick up in the air ALOT which inturn you will never get your seat to fit or look right. The rear plastic also flows with the frame rail . I dont see how it can be done without major mods to the frame, but im very intrested to see!! good luck
Posted by: slim_shawn
well like i said, i am TRYING this. no one else has done it. so why not.
Posted by: red_rider38
Would it be easier to add the '08 plastics. I think the newer has the thinner tank and seat like the 450r.
Posted by: slim_shawn
well i already have the 450r plastics bought and they are on the way, so i am doing it, and i will make them work.

Posted by: quadracer30

Posted by: dudeman_29

Posted by: SG1
400EX with 450R Plastic.
Check this out I did this on Paint I know it's not the best but it was worth a shot.
Posted by: slim_shawn
what a screw around to get the plastics here, i actually had to contact ebay after a month of no responses from the seller. hi finally shipped them and i got half my money back. they cleared canada customs yesterday afternoon, so should be here within the next few days tops, and then i am hitting the project hard
Posted by: klutch
finally was wondering what happened if it turns out well i want to do the same switch on my 400 lol.
Posted by: slim_shawn
got the gastank bolted on and the front and rear fenders mocked up. the front fenders will be easy to finish, but the rear fenders are gonna be hard. i just about got it figured out. the hard part is figuring out how to attach them to the frame so that they are lined up and not hitting the exhaust or battery box

do you have pics of the progress yet?
Just so we can see the way it looks with the things mocked up.
Posted by: slim_shawn
i am just getting the pics ready right now
Posted by: slim_shawn
heres some pics, this is pretty much exactly how it will look. it will have the headlight and the plastics will be a little more tight in places. keep in mind the only thing it is not gonna be tweaked at all in these pics is the gastank

Thats awesome! Once you get the step-by-step up, i am so doing this!
Posted by: klutch
If i didnt know any better i would have thought it was a 450r lol
Posted by: slim_shawn
ya, i love the look of it. i ran into a few problems with the stuff i was doing to it. the 450r rear shock had to turned around so the resi was facing towards the back. the resi was to big to fit the other way. so when you do this you can't run the snorkrel. so i blocked the hole where the snorkel goes into the airbox off. just going to run a k&n powerlid. the twist throttle i got didn't work either, so i scraped that idea and returned it for my money back. with the 450r gastank you have to remove the plastic heat shield below the gastank cause the tank wont sit right with it on there. so i am just gonna make one out of tin. i took the front fender l brackets on the shock mounts off, and flatened them out for the gastank brackets. you have to drill a new hole on either side of the top motor mount, but they work perfect. you will have to run a longer fuel line too. the little trunk in the rear fenders has to be cut off because it hits the crossmember behind the airbox. also on the front, in order for the headlight to fit you will have to move the cdi box to the back of that piece of frame it is already on. thats all i have figured out so far.
Posted by: red_rider38
You should just use an aluminized heat shild for the tankhttp://fstg.motosport.com/motographics/images/products/hardparts/tools/helix-ahb.jpg
I am really looking into doing the same. Maybe post close ups pics of brackets. Guess I'll be looking on ebay for used plastics.
Posted by: slim_shawn
once i get all the brackets made, i will post pics of each one and whatever holes i have to drill so that if you guys do it, you will know exactly where they go
Posted by: NJ450rider
hah wow that looks really good. my 400ex might be getting a makeover when i order new plastic for my 450r.
Posted by: 440challenger
Can you take pictures with the seat off?
Posted by: slim_shawn
i will, post some more pics later today. i am gonna be doing some more work on it today.
Posted by: slim_shawn
ok, here ya go boys. all the brackets for the gastank and rear fenders.
this is the bracket i used for the gastank. i used the L bracket for the old front fenders that sits on top of the shock tower. i flatened it out and used the 2 existing hole in it. one for the gastank and one to bolt it to the top motor mount. you need to drill a hole on the top motormount. there is already a indent in the motormount. drill that out. i used a sapcer between the motormount and the flatened bracket.
<a href="http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/?action=view¤t=Picture014.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/Picture014.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/?action=view¤t=Picture013.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/Picture013.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
next was the rear fenders. leave the old rubber grommets that the seat sat in on the crossmember behind the airbox. thay will make the fenders sit just about perfect height. cut the little trunk that is in the 450 fenders out as it will be in the way. i went to a local hardware store and bought some flat stock metal to make the brackets. there is a mount on the top of the fender on either side under the seat. i made a L bracket out of the flatstock for these. once you have them bent for the right height, you can either drill holes in the frame to bolt them on or weld to the frame. i choose to bolt them.
<a href="http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/?action=view¤t=Picture008.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/Picture008.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/?action=view¤t=Picture012.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/Picture012.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/?action=view¤t=Picture011.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/Picture011.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
next i used the flat stock again to make brackts for the side of the rear fenders. this will keep the fenders from rubbing the exhaust and battery. where the heelguards bolt to the frame, i bolted the bracket to there and then used he existing mounts on the rear fenders. i just copied the bracket from side to side. you will have to tweak the brackets a bit once they are bolted to the frame, but you will see what i mean when you get to that point.
<a href="http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/?action=view¤t=Picture009.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/Picture009.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/?action=view¤t=Picture010.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/Picture010.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/?action=view¤t=Picture017.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/Picture017.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
i also relocated the ignition to the side of the front fender.
<a href="http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/?action=view¤t=Picture016.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj257/slim_shawn/Picture016.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
this is it so far, more tonight maybe, or this weekend
Posted by: slim_shawn
bad news, i was working on the plastics today and noticed that my frame is broke right beside the top motor mount. which really sucks. so i guess i am tearing it down to the bare frame now. gonna gusset it and get it powdercoated. i am gonna go candy red powdercoat for the frame and subframe. gloss black for the a-arms and swingarm and misc parts. so the plastics are obviously put on hold now for a bit. even though all i have left is the front fenders and headlight. sorry boys, i guess taking it out on the frozen lakes here when it is -15 and jumping it, is hard on the frame, lol

Lol, well good luck and hope it turns out nice!
Posted by: slim_shawn
here is the finished product. i think it looks awesome. i still have to take the gastank off so i can fix the frame at work this week. so i will take pics off all the brackets for the front fenders and the headlight then. i just used the seat latch off the old rear seat for the new one. thats pretty self explanatory. i am gonna wait for the teardown till next winter, so i can save my money and buy houser a-arms and a lonestar axle when i do it. i still have to buy 4 new tires and 4 new rims this spring, so i have the money for that, but not really anything else as i just bought a house with a huge shop.
