how can you tell what year it is..my bother has a 250r but the guy we bought it off of never told us the year of it...

if the front tubes under the front hood have about 3/8" metal rods facing foward its a 86, if it doesnt and it has no rear motor mounts on the frame its a 87. If the frame has rear motor mounts its an 88/89. There are other things that distigish between the 86/87 and 88/89 frames, but the rear motor mount is easy to explain. I dont konw how to tell between an 88 and 89 frame....

^ I agree with all of that, on the 86-87 the rear motor mount will be in the swingarm

ask the guy you got it from.

Sounds like a good trivia question, but I know the answer. An 89 chassis has mounting holes on the subframe for the factory heel guards.

also the footpeg mounts are different between 86-87 and 88-89 aswell as the location of the vin. Also werent the gussets on the head stay area diferent??

A 86-87 will have the vin tag right by the rear shock canister mount on left side of frame!where as a 88-89 will have a vin tag right under the nose up front. hope this helps?
Oh and also the 88-89 have an aluminum swing arm where as the 86-87 have a steel one!

I thought it was the other way around on the vin tag. I am sure Rich could set me straight.

my 86 vin tag was up front by the front shocks

then somebody moved it, cause it doesn't belong there on an 86.
I have a day off and had some time to play with some pics to help Ingleful out.
Also, that Rich fella is pretty smart! got a pic of the 89 holes????

first pic is an 87 frame that shows the 87-88-89 style motor mounts. Also shown is the 86-87 style of footpeg mounts at the frame with 2 bolt design. Notice, the front motor mount has no support bar as does the 86 only frame. Also, is the ONLY place that shows the vin tag for the 86-87's. It's tack welded to the frame and often broke off and missing.

next....86 frame. Note the front bumper mounts which are only 4 collars instead of solid framing all the way across. Also, the motor mounts are waaaay different than the other 3 years and have an added vertical bar underneath to carry the weight of the motor. (my personal favorite!) Also a shot of the 86-87 footpeg mounts...notice the two holes in the frame.

next....88-89 footpegs

86-87 footpegs

a classic 88....what a beauty! Shown are the front bumper mount design compared to the 86 only, the stamped vin location on the 88-89's and a shot of the footpegs on the 88-89 onlys.

learn something everyday... I though the 87 frame was mostly the same as the 86 (front motor mount, front bumper mount). so where are the pics of the 89 heel gaurds??
Posted by: Fordtrax
Extreme, Your circle might be a little off?
But the vins on my 88 are up higher on the frame between where the top of front shocks mount.
The part you have circled is where you would find them on a 250x or 300ex tho!lol
I just thought id point that out!

Is that your machine? It's pretty nice, all it needs is an original seat.

no, not mine
I saved that pic a few years ago while searching for a buy. Nice, ain't it!
Yea, the vin's hidden up between the shock towers on the 88. Too many circles to deal with...lol. I had a pot of coffee while making all that.

1989 was the only year that had footgaurds. The 89 frames have a foot gaurd mounting bolt hole. Hope this picture helps.

Wow I cant believe I forgot about the 86 style bumper mount...DOH!
Heres some shots of my 88 frame if it helps any.
What I meant by the gusset (its where the VIN is stamped)

EDIT:
for those that don't know exactly where I am talking about :

Here you can see that wavy bar in the back that replaces the 86-87 motor mount.
