Chrome Corrosion - Winter?

I had some small white corrision on some chrome parts this past winter when I let my bikes sit in the trailer. It wasn't deep - easily taken off by steel wool. Is this caused by moisture in the air? Or something maybe WD-40 could have caused - by attacting the moisture.

Any help with this problem would be great. I'd like to get a handle on the problem before I put them away for a while.

chrome shouldn't get white corrosion on it, but polished aluminum will. wd-40 repels moisture
