Cherry red header should I be worried?

Ok I just noticed it tonight but the header on my R is cherry red once it has been idleing for 5 mins or so and if I ride it around the yard. The problem is it runs perfect with the pilot I have in. I tried the next size bigger before and it was terrible and bogged out bad even with the fuel screw all the way in. I turned the fuel screw out with the 42 pilot thats in it now and it didnt make a difference in the color of the pipe its about the first 6 inches. Its not as noticeable during the day but I can really see it at night of course. I am wondering if it is a major problem or not?

That's normal.

My dad's 450R is the same way.

Good to hear. I just happened to notice it. Never happened before even with the stock pipe. I was hoping I didnt have to change anything I finally have it where it runs good.

you are in grave danger! that means your quad is about to blow up. j/k i can light a cigarette off mine.

just quite running that propaline oxide in there and you'll be fine

aftermarket exhaust use thinner tubing and the heat is shown through the thinner metal tube better.

sports quad headers are made out of thin metal to save weight wich is why the glow cherry red. jetting could also make it glow farther out.

The stock pipe is a lot thicker, you shouldn't be seeing it on a stocker, on a stock pipe its definitely a bad thing to see. I'm not a fan of it personally, I guess a slight red color in the first few inches ok, but I've seen some glowing bright red after only a minute or so much farther out up to 8" out of the head... thats too much IMO.

Its funny you say that. When I brought my 06 home it was winter started it for the first time went inside to get a warm jacket on came out and the stock header was RED hot for about 12 inches maybe more boy that scared my a little. next day put in 45 pilot now it only 6 inches and runs like a champ.( emmisions !!!!!!!!!)

Did changing the pilot change any thing else? I could care less about emissions I want my machine to run efficient and safely I dont want all the heat it makes running soo lean.

the 45 pilot helped it start and run better I have also put in crf needle and put in a 165 main with no lid. put in 160 main in winter with a custom lid ( about 20 3/8 size holes around tha outside) of lid to keep snow off filter. works great.
