have a friend running a 125 his kid has broke two cranks in two weeks what is the fix ?????
Posted by: ATKnewbie
Is the motor stock or is it heavily modified?
Is this a true Xtreme or is it one of the knock offs such as Baja?
Answering these two questions will help others on this site answer your question.

Stock cdi ? Dropped the rev limiter ? What damage occurred to the cases or jug when the parts scattered ? Xtreme has a six month parts and labor warranty on engines (the complete bike) with no internal mods, purchased from and Aut. Dealer . Greg

This guy hasn't posted any answers to the questions. My guess would be that it's one of those costco bikes because of all the Typhoon reviews and problems that I've seen not one had a problem with the crank unless the motor was modded up. Either that or he got one of a few.

sorry gust got back to you it has some mods it brakes the end off the crank on the clutch side where the splines are
Posted by: Ride1Rob
What exact mods are done to it?
Posted by: markvette
if it has the crank mounted clutch it is not an xtreme it is a copy. the xtreme motor does not have the clutch mounted on the crank nut the baja does.

well there is a centrifugal clutch on the crank on it and it is an extreme there is a clutch on the trainy input shaft also
it has 15:1 piston a little porting cdi and a cam
it will crank for about two laps

Bashing the Xtreme as having a junk crank with the mod you claim (15 to 1 compression) is very immature . It seems your buddys lack of experience in engine building has caused the problem.Common sense will tell you that if you beef the top as much as you claim and do nothing to the bottom end you will scatter parts. It seems redundant to spend the money for the mods you claim and spend nothing on the bottom end . We have zero problems with our Xtreme TY125 as many others, and if we did i am sure Xtreme would honor the free labor and free parts warranty for six months. I am aware that there was problems with them when they first hit the market, but they have steeped up to the plate to correct them. Greg

15:1 compression
. Are you kidding me? With a 14:1 on the 450's you're taking a chance. No wonder the crank won't hold. Does anyone actually make a 15:1 piston for the extreme?

15:1

Anything else? an IRK? lightened oil slinger perhaps?????.
My Typhoon has a cam, porting and silly compression but haven't had any problems.

Ozlinc, have you installed the Inner Rotor Kit on you typhoon ? I have one ,and the cdi for my Josh,s quad. Two things are keeping me from the mod, dropping the rev limiter (he is 5 ,scatter parts) and losing the electric start .Greg

That's a great question. Is anyone running IRK on their 125 or 140's.
Our buds had one on their 140 and broke the crank.
The only problem we had with our crank was when Ash tried to speed shift on a start.
Our daughter has both a 125 and 140. She ran a race in the Spring and it was cc limited. So, we took her stock 125 motor and put a high compression piston from Xtreme, 26 mikuni carb, Big valve race head w/ 28/24mm valves ported and polished, custom cam. Her bike already had FMF exhaust and CDI from Xtreme and Elka's.
She loved it ! So, she started racing it. She ran it this summer in the Full Moon Series (the largest night racing series in the South ) and won the championship. It's an awesome combo. We would appreciate any feed back on the IRK so we can decide if it would benefit her any.

It seems that the IRK may be guilty . I did purchase the kit w/ the cdi when we ordered the bike from Xtreme and did not install it. A local shop told me about that mod being detrimental to the crank on the pit bike engines, and suggested that it not be installed .
Ozlink did answer my question ,he sent it private message .IRK in the pit bikes, breaks the crank.
Apparently removing the weight from the crank upsets the momentum (inertia) ,with the clutch set up the way it is will cause the crank to break.
Thats what i have read and been told about the IRK ad lighting up the oil slinger. And i made a decision not to install it.
It seems that for every body that mentions a broken crank also mentions they removed 2.6 pounds off of the crank with the Internal Rotor Kit.
I will leave Josh,s rotor stock.I break that boys crank and he will not be happy.Greg

So it's the Internal Rotor Kits that are breaking the crank and not the bigbores? I was kind of skeptical about getting the 146 kit because of previous peeps have problems with the cranks and they also had the BB kits in them.
BTW Godgirl, she's a cutie and can ride as well. You guys keep up the good work

This problem is present only in the 125's because of the dual clutch setup. The 70/90's have the clutch on the mainshaft I believe and has worked out for many others on these machines.

Sorry to all you die hards but I have broke 2 cranks too. It is a real Xtreme Typhoon125 I have talked to M.Lynch at Xtreme about it he knows about the prob. and said their is no fix yet. He said the clutch is a flawed design and it keeps breaking at the clutch bolt. My typhoon does have a clutch on the crank. When it was bone stock it broke one about 2 months in. I thought it was just a bad crank and wouldn't happen again so when I had it fixed I had a 146 kit put in it, the new crank which came from Xtreme lasted 30 minutes. My boy only weighs 45 lbs so its not getting dogged to bad. Clutch has always slipped from day one no matter how you adjust it. I have gave up on it , going to put in a 150cc manual tranny motor from T-bolt. This will solve the prob. Anybody looking for a extra motor? needs a crank$125.00 from Xtreme, have all the stock parts plus 146 kit, big carb, cdi, crower power cam etc. Contact: 304-934-6401 Randall

still have that motor?

Has anyone found a fix for the cranks yet - or a stronger replacement crank??
Posted by: lilman
i just installed a new motor from xtreme last weekend with hi comp piston and cam installed by them it went really well but last night while practising we broke our crank as well . i am curious though has anyone else with this problem noticed one of the c clips missing on the primary clutch there are 3 in there when i pulled it out there were only 2?? could this have come off rolled around and tweeked it sideways enough to break it? maybe this is the mistery of the breaking cranks?
