I think that thread is like 1/2 the size it originally was. Tempers flared and posts were removed or something like that. Bottom line seems to be that while they widen the stance, it changes the suspension geometry in a way that extended A-arms won't. In some situations those kits may be an appropriate choice. But they will increase bump steer and bump steer is bad.
Note: Don't confuse bump steer with bump induced tire deflection. When you hit a bump and it jerks the bars in your hands, that's deflection. When an individual tire turns inward or outward as it moves through the suspension's stroke, that's bump steer. You want as little bump steer as possible and those widening kit increase it.
