How much space should there be between where the belt max's out and the top of the front variator? I marked my sheave and have a 1/4" is that good? Or should it be riding higher?

there are a couple of factors to be condsidered, are all components stock? and what cc bike do you have ? the 50cc has a 780 mm belt which cannot travel as high as a 787mm belt found on the 90cc model. roller weight and torque spring and variator and belt length as well as power out put can affect the belt travel. if you have a stock drx 50 then 1/4 inch is about right. if you have a stock 90drx then you should be able to achieve about 1/8.

it is a 50cc. it has some engine work. but besides that all the clutch componants are stock. 3.5g rollers, stock spring, and stock variator. would a bigger belt help with what i have or should i try a heaveier spring and rollers to get the stock belt up higher?

On our 70 we used a Koso front variator set up and a 788 x 17 belt and it worked great..
I haven't tried this on the 50 since we are a stock only class here in FL.
I imagine it would produce similar results...
