What should be my next bike?

Well I will be buying a "new" dirt bike in a year or so, so here is what I was thinking. I mainly do trail riding, so most likely a thumper, but I wouldn't shut out a pinger quite yet. Well first of all I wanted to pay around maybe 2500-3000 for a nice 250 thumper, But I am pretty sure that I could get an early 2000"s pinger for around 2,000 with some mods (pipe, silencer, reeds etc...). Well I am a Honda guy but wouldn't mind a yamaha or suzuki either so what do ya'll think? Am I a complete DUMB@$$ or what LOL?
